HISTORICAL RE-ENACTMENT OF CONFEDERATE RAID ON CHELTENHAM POST-OFFICE

ANNOUNCEMENT IN THE ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH, OCTOBER 7, 2004

Historians will re-enact Civil War skirmish

The Dogtown Historical Society is staging what it calls the first Civil War re-enactment in St. Louis at 1 p.m. Oct. 17 at Manchester Road and Dale Avenue, with dayloug activities at 6550 Dale.

In 1864, a band of Confederate soldiers raided the post office at Augustus Muegge's store at that location. Union soldiers were dispatched to apprehend the raiders.

Members of the 8th Missouri Voluntary Infantry will attend the 10:30 am. Mass at St. James the Greater Church nearby in Dogtown at 6401 Wade. The troops will then set up camp along Dale.

The raid will be re-enacted at 1 p.m., followed by living history activities at the camp site. The camp will break up at 5 p.m., followed by a party at Pats Bar and Grill, Oakland and Tamm avenues.
