Time: Tuesday/ Thursday; 1:00-3:00pm / 1:00-4:00pm

Required Text: Sustaining the Earth, seventh edition {high mountain lake on cover}, G. Tyler Miller, Jr.

Lab manual: There will not be a lab manual!   Students are required to create an Environmental Notebook with lab and field notes.   Lab exercises, handouts, readings, etc. will be provided.

Field Trips: Field trips are an integral and unusual part of the course. Attendance is required. Notes are required. Cameras and tape recorders are welcome(get instructor permission). Directions will be given in class, usually with a map. Please car pool when possible; share rides, save gas!

Evaluation:

1.   *   Final Exam(comprehensive - essay)                                              100pts

2.   *   Environmental 'Notebook', (including field trip notes} 100pts

Content of 'notebook' -

A.   your 'focus'/topic area (for your poster session)example.....you choose 'water pollution of urban cities' - focusing upon St. Louis. All the articles that you find are on this topic or subject or are related.

                                                                                      OR

B. Basic environmental issues that you find, come across or search for in the media..................incorporates media articles from N.Y. Times,    Post Dispatch, Wash. Post.,    Time, Newsweek, Wall St. Jrnl,   C.S. Monitor, Natl. Geographic, internet sources and                                       websites. Local papers from hometown or international location. These articles are cut and pasted/ xeroxed/printed off and   placed in a designated notebook - this will be turned in and graded.    Articles must have title, date and name of the source.

3. * 'Poster Session': (explained in class by instructor, with examples)                                                                         100pts

A. A Poster   Display of some topic/ concept/ conflict/ success story, that interests   you and has an overriding environmental focus

B. A   short 15 minute presentation associated with that topic and display poster.

4.*    Attendance to any environmental lecture, environmental organization meeting, presentation/lecture on an environmental topic, 'town meeting', community or environmental research project, participation in a community study or recognized field trip...etc. Or a self generated field trip of your choice (with instructors approval)                                                                            50pts

**Turn in your notes (date,time and location) from any 'event' along with the signature of the speaker

5.   *    Participation in class/lab and field                                               50pts

Attendance to and participation in class and field trips are expected, needed and required. Please speak up in class - we need to know your thoughts, opinions and what YOU think!!. If you have a problem or conflict, please see me.

 6.   *   Written assignments (short written labs,   responses or assignments or quizzes ....... from field trips, lectures, films or readings 100pts
