--A bi-weekly digest of news and information for the Webster University extended campus community.-- |
||
A Special Note from our President: Greetings to Members of Webster University’s Extended Campus Community! It is July 13th, and I have now completed seven days on the job as President of Webster University. Throughout the spring and summer I have received notes and letters from so many of you! Thank-you for the warm welcome extended to me from those of you in the extended campus community. My first weeks in St. Louis have provided the opportunity to meet several hundred members of the local community, to visit the three St. Louis metro campus sites [see photo of my visit to Westport], and to take in some of this region’s distinctive attractions, including a Cardinals’ game, the Zoo, an Opera Theatre production, and a trip to the Science Center. As I learn Webster “from the inside out,” I look forward to the opportunities to interact with you and learn more about the important work you do in service of our students and the communities in which they live. While the September Directors’ meeting will provide one such opportunity, I’ll also look forward to reading Shop Talk, making plans to visit some extended campus sites this year, and staying in touch by e-mail and telephone. During this coming year I will continue to explore partnerships to realize more fully Webster’s commitment to prepare each student for global citizenship and individual excellence. Making real the one-ness of Webster, with our many and diverse parts, calls upon our ability to celebrate that which unifies us and at the same time honor that which is distinctive about our programs, sites, and people. I will continue to pay attention to our needed investments in the infrastructure and people of Webster, the strength of our University. We will increasingly use technology to bridge time and space as we connect a worldwide community focused on the goals of Vision 2020. Please contact me at any time. I can be reached at stroble@webster.edu. Ms. Jeanelle Wiley, Administrative Assistant to the President, can be reached at jeanellewiley10@webster.edu or 314 968-6996. Go Gorloks! Dr. Beth Stroble |

On Wednesday, July 8, President Stroble and her administrative assistant, Jeanelle Wiley, visited the Westport and WingHaven Campuses, meeting with staff and touring the facilities. Pictured are from left, Beth Stroble, Westport staff members Sharon McDonald, Pam Aleshunas, Assistant Director Pat Froeckmann, Laurie Nest and Director Mary Kunde. I-9 Update As you know, the Department of Labor issued a new I-9 form effective this year. In conjunction with this, stricter penalties have been imposed for institutions not using best practices. The U.S Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has prepared a Handbook for Employers with detailed information on properly filling out the I-9. Please make sure that it is forwarded to the person at your campus responsible for new hire paperwork. Quick Reminders:
The USCIS has also issued a notice that the current I-9 (Rev. 02/02/09) will remain in effect past the June 30 deadline, until a new revision is issued. For more information on USCIS and its programs, visit www.uscis.gov. Sarasota Graduation
The Sarasota-Manatee campus of Webster University held its ninth graduation ceremony on June 6. Director Brad Moser is pictured in the inset (right) with adjunct faculty member Cliff Christenson. Celebrating Graduation, Camp Lejeune Style
Camp Lejeune had the fortune to have AVP Carol Adams (front row, blue and brown floral dress) as guest speaker, whose incredible style and dignity, says director Cindy Rose (front row, right), "touched the hearts of our graduates. Her presence and words of wisdom will be remembered by many who, the day after graduation deployed to Afghanistan, Iraq , Germany and Okinawa." Now Featuring: Webster’s New Electronic Billing Statement and Payment System Webster’s electronic billing statement and payment system is now up and running! The CashNet System allows students to view their billing statements online and to make payment on their accounts. Please visit the Bursar Web page to learn more about the system so that you may help your students become familiar with the tool. During the months of July and August students will continue to receive paper statements and will also have the option of viewing their statements or making payments online. |
Important Numbers!
Our new phone system is up and running (mostly)! You may have noticed that when you call either one of these numbers for Academic Affairs, you get a menu of options that will direct you to the right person to handle your call. Instruction Support @ Your Library Are your students challenged by the need to find articles quickly? Within the library’s online databases, Article Linker may link from the citation to full-text in over 30,000 periodicals in other databases. There are other strategies when time is short. 1. Maximize full-text results with the library’s Quick Search option. This option searches 10 Ebsco databases at once to give multidisciplinary coverage of a topic. The search automatically retrieves only full-text articles and students may also easily limit to scholarly (peer reviewed) journals. To access Quick Search: from the library webpage, follow the link Look for: Articles/Databases and select the Quick Search link from the menu. 2. Want to search a database other than Ebsco? Most article databases offer a “limit to full-text option” on the search form. Please note that both strategies override the Article Linker option. Contact the Webster Library Reference Desk (1-800-985-4279 or Ask A Librarian for timely help. Faculty, you can help us build our collection of essential online journals in your discipline by checking the Journal Magazine Newspaper A-Z List. If the library does not have access to the full-text, let us know so we may add essential titles as our budget permits.
