Frequently Asked Questions

What kinds of tests can I take at the Testing Center? 

  • Individual make-up exams for Webster courses (with instructor permission)
  • Webster course exams for students who need extra time or other special accommodations
  • Placement tests for Webster's Spanish, French, and German language classes
  • Waiver exams for St. Louis-based Webster MBA students who want to skip BUSN 5600 (accounting) or BUSN 5620 (economics)
  • CLEP or DSST college-credit exams (for that test's costs plus a $25 proctoring fee)
  • Exams from another university (for a $25 proctoring fee)
  • CBASE exams for student teachers on five Saturdays a year (for $50)


When and where can I take these tests? 

  • We are located in the Academic Resource Center complex in Loretto Hall Room 41 (on the ground floor, down the corridor from the big student dining hall).  Our address is 470 E. Lockwood Avenue.  Call our office directly at 314-246-8225 or e-mail us at arc@webster.edu if you need additional directions!
  • We have five private testing booths in two rooms, each equipped with a password-protected computer hooked up to the Webster network, and each visible through glass to proctors. In the event that two students are taking the same test at the same time, we will try to seat them in separate rooms. 
  • During Webster's spring and fall semesters, we are open from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Friday, although some tests have more restricted hours.  We strongly prefer that appointments be made in advance, but we will accept walk-ins provided that we have sufficient space, time, and the test in question.  During breaks and in the summer, we are open 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with evening hours by appointment one or two nights a week.
  • Students who miss a testing appointment need to secure an approval from the course instructor to take the exam in the Testing Center again. Students will be allowed one appointment reschedule per exam, any additional reschedules will not be allowed unless the Testing Center is given permission from the course instructor. Webster students with ADA accommodations with the ARC, will be handled on a case by case basis.


I am a student. What do I have to do if I want to take a test at the Testing Center?

  • If you are taking a Webster course exam, notify your instructor; unless you have established testing in a distraction-reduced environment as one of your academic accommodations for a disability here at Webster, you need your instructor's permission to take tests here!
  • If you need your exams proctored on behalf of another university, call us and check to be sure that we are open during the days/hours you need to take your test. (We try to avoid proctoring external exams during Webster's midterms and finals periods, but there are occasional exceptions to this policy.)  You may also need to ask us to fill out or sign a form from your home university, depending on their policies.  As of 6/1/2013, our proctoring fee is $25 per exam.
  • Make an appointment with the Testing Center at least 24 hours in advance, and possibly as much as a week ahead if you need a specific time during midterms and finals periods.  You can call (314-246-8225), e-mail (arc@webster.edu), or come to our office (LH41) to make an appointment.  (Some Webster instructors will ask that you notify them about the date and time of your appointment, but we will also go through the department to notify your instructor if we don't already have your test.)
  • Arrive on time for the testing appointment, carrying some form of photo ID, a test fee (if applicable), and any books/notes required for the test.  (We can provide extra paper, writing implements, and even calculators in a pinch.)


I am an instructor, and one of my students has just asked to take a test in the Testing Center. What should I do?

  • Check whether the student has test-related disability accommodations (you should have received a letter to this effect).  If so, you are required to allow them to test with us; if not, it is up to you whether or not to allow the student to test outside class.  We will make an appointment at a student's request, but we can only administer a test with the instructor's permission!
  • Respond promptly to either your student's or our requests for tests, either by sending us a copy of the test with a cover sheet (see next question), or by letting us know that the student does not have permission to take that test in the Testing Center.


I am a Webster instructor. What do I have to do if I want one of my students to take his/her test at the Testing Center?

  • First of all, identify any students who will need to test outside class (for whatever reason) and remind them to make testing appointments in advance, or contact us yourself to make the appointment after checking with the student.  Please remember that we only have four testing spaces, so your students will not always be able to secure appointments for a very specific date and time (for instance, during your class period).  We will try to accommodate your requests as far as possible!
  • Send us one copy of the test for each student who needs to take it, ideally well in advance of the date when the student is expected to take it.  We accept tests delivered to our office (LH6), via fax (314-968-5919), or via email (arc@webster.edu).  In cases where there is an open retake policy for an entire class, please contact the Testing Center Coordinator directly at 314-246-8225.
  • Enclose a completed cover sheet along with each test, or include the relevant information in the body of an e-mail message.  This will tell us whether/what the test is timed, what materials the student can use on the test, how and where you'd like the test returned to you, and what the student's name(s) is/are!  (If we don't have a student name, we can't give out the test; if we don't have the other information, we'll default to an un-timed, closed-book test hand-delivered to the course's home department.  Also, please note that we normally return a test by only one method; let us know if you need an exception.)
  • Let us know as soon as possible if the test does not arrive when/how you expect it; we keep files indicating how and to whom each test was delivered, so we can often help you trace an errant test.


I'm a Webster instructor, and my class just had to cancel a meeting. Can you proctor an exam for my entire class?

  • Unfortunately, we do not have the resources (staff, space, etc.) to give exams to an entire class at once, even if we use your classroom and class period to do so.
  • For the same reason, we ask that you not send your entire class down to the Testing Center for a single test; please contact the Testing Center Coordinator directly if your class is extremely small and you want us to consider an exception to this policy.


I'm at a Webster site outside the home campus. Can you proctor an exam for me?

  • If the test-taker can come to our office in Webster Groves, certainly!  Every semester, we administer exams for Webster students who are based at other campuses but are able to reach ours.
  • Unfortunately, we do not have the facilities to supervise exams elsewhere; you might want to check with your friendly local Webster site director, since many Webster campuses have their own arrangements for test-taking.  You might also check with the Consortium of College Testing Centers to find a nearby testing site willing to proctor your exam (there may be a fee involved).


How many tests do you give each year, anyway?

  • Last year, we administered more than 2300 tests.  This year, we expect to top 2500.  We haven't lost one yet!
