ILC 2150-- Topics in Culture(s): Arabic Customs and Traditions
This course will examine Arabic culture: social aspects, customs, traditions, literature, and arts. It will examine the influence of Islam on Arabic culture regarding current social and business issues. The students will discover significant differences in customs such as dating, marriage and dress. Also students will investigate issues related to business and dress ethics. This course provides students with a better understanding of Arabic culture, and will make them better prepared as a visitor, a soldier, or a business person in an Arabic country. Specific topics for in-depth study will be chosen according to the background and interest of the students. An International Studies Certificate Course.

Language

ILC 1090-- Elementary Language: Level I: Arabic
This course is designed to provide students a basic knowledge of the sound system and language structure of modern Arabic. Students will develop basic skills of pronunciation, reading, writing, listening and speaking. Also they will be able to understand the Arabic and Islamic cultures. Students must participate in speaking, reading and writing activities as well as the cultural activities. Before the end of the course students should communicate with each other in writing and speaking about: their daily activities, targeted topics and cultural events. Attendance is required.

ILC 1100-- Elementary Language: Level II: Arabic
Prerequisite: ILC 1090 Arabic or equivalent. 
The aim of the course is to develop a fairly high knowledge of the Arabic language. Upon completing the course the student should be able to read and speak basic Arabic, build phrases, and understand a wide variety of Arabic texts. Students will also learn about the Arab Culture ranging from Morocco in the West to Iraq in the East. Attendance is required.


ILC 2090-- Intermediate Language: Level I: Arabic
Prerequisite: ILC 1100 Arabic or equivalent. 
This course is designed to provide students with grammatical rules to strengthen reading, speaking and writing skills, and sentence structure of modern Arabic. Students will develop their skills of pronunciation, reading, writing, listening and speaking. Also they will be able to apply these skills to understanding spoken Arabic in more than one Arabic country. Students will participate in speaking, reading and writing activities as well as cultural activities. Before the end of the course students should express in Arabic their ideas and opinions about their daily activities, targeted topics and cultural events. Attendance is required.


ILC 2100-- Intermediate Language: Level II: Arabic
Prerequisite: ILC 2090 Arabic or equivalent. 
The aim of the course is to continue developing a fairly high knowledge of the Arabic language. Upon completing this course, students should be able to expand their language skills: listening comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing and apply it to daily situations. Students will participate in speaking, reading and writing activities as well as cultural activities. Before the end of the course students should express in Arabic their ideas and opinions about their daily activities, targeted topics and cultural events while understanding the distinctions between Arab countries. Attendance is required.
