ILC 2150 Topics in Culture(s): Culinary Art of Thailand (3 credits)
This course introduces Thailand’s unique culture via its world-renowned culinary
art and its linkage to social traditions. Students will discover the importance of
food within the Thai culture, the concept of healthy–balance in every recipe, and
the differences between regional dishes. Based on individual interests and research
topics, students will work in groups to study cultural aspects of a Thai recipe. This
course will challenge students to address their research topics within the concept
of Thai philosophy of food, the basics of Thai cooking, and the importance of food

ILC 2150 Topics in Culture(s): Tourism in Thailand (1 credit)
Tourism is Thailand’s leading industry. It not only includes food services, retail,
entertainment and the like but also the sex industry. Students will be exposed to
the uniqueness of Thai culture, traditions which enable the scope and scale of this
industry. We will also discuss the overt existence of this thriving industry and its

ILC 2150 Topics in Culture(s): The Rise of Thai Film (1 credit)
The Thai film industry is a new, growing force that is setting new standards for
the international stage as well as in Thailand itself. Its crop of new directors is
bringing within them the unique experiences that only a Thai lifestyle can provide.
The seminar will use scenes and situations of Thai films to discuss Thai history,
Thai lifestyle and Thailand’s pop culture. Films include Nang Nak, Last Life in the
Universe, 69, Citizen Dog, Syndrome and a Century, and many more. An International Studies Certificate Course. An International Studies Major Course.

This course will introduce Thailand’s unique culture via its world-renowned culinary
art and its linkage to Thailand’s rich social traditions. We will study the healthy
balance concept in Thai cooking and the secret of using Thai cooking ingredients and

ILC 2150 Topics in Cultures(s): Thaksinomics
The seminar examines the rise and fall of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra
and his ruling Thai Rak Thai Party. Students will gain a better understanding of issues
facing Thailand’s political battles. We will discuss the current economic situation
and the future of Thailand’s democracy. Textbook: The Thaksinization of Thailand,

ILC 1090.03 Elementary Language: Level I: Thai
This course develops listening comprehension, speaking, reading and writing skills
in the Thai language. The goal is fluency in basic linguistic structures needed for
expression in everyday situations. The course also introduces various aspects of Thai
culture.
