Teaching Philosophy

"I create a collaborative environment in which students can become engaged and inspired. Introduction to Media Production classes stress a combination of theory and technique to explore the myriad ways medium and message shape one another. In advanced classes such as Experimental Video, students work on their own ideas and I function as a catalyst by providing structure, suggestions and cultural context."

Van McElwee's body of work includes over 70 single-channel pieces, installations and web projects. Grants and awards include: A Guggenheim Fellowship, The American Film Institute Independent Filmmaker Award, seven individual artist's grants from the the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), and a travel grant from the Government of India. McElwee's work has been exhibited extensively worldwide and is represented by The Kitchen in New York, Bruno David Gallery in St. Louis, Heure Exquise! in France, LUX in the UK, the Inter Media Art Institute in Germany, and Trabant Gallery in Austria.

Van McElwee was named a 2010 Guggenheim Fellow. According to the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation,  the fellowship is given to "men and women who have already demonstrated exceptional capacity for productive scholarship or exceptional creative ability in the arts."
