Received his doctorate in Sound System Engineering from McGill University, M.F.A. in Theatrical Sound Design & Technology from College Conservatory of Music – University of Cincinnati (UC-CCM) and B.S. in Acoustical Engineering from Cornell University.


Prior to joining the faculty at Webster, he served as a Visiting Professor and acting Area Head for the Sound Design Program at UC-CCM. He was an instructor of Electro-acoustics and Solid-State Electronics at McGill University, where he was also a researcher and acoustical consultant for the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Music and Media Technology. He has authored and/or co-authored publications for the Audio Engineering Society (AES), Acoustical Society of America (ASA) and International Community for Auditory Display (ICAD).

Dr. Ryan has been the sound designer for productions at companies including the Tony Award winning Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, the Montreal New Music Festival, Le Nouvel Ensemble Moderne, Le Société de Musique Contemporaine du Québec and UC-CCM. In 2010 he won the Peggy Ezekiel Award, for outstanding achievement in the arts, from the United States Institute for Theatre Technology (USITT) for his work in the field of sound system design and engineering. He has been an audio consultant for first-national theatrical tours, opera companies, recording studios and entertainment centers, and has been the head of sound and main-stage monitor engineer for a variety of large-scale, multi-stage music festivals. As a live mix engineer, he has worked with a multitude of musical genres and bands including Ladysmith Black Mambazo, The Avett Brothers, Rusted Root, Toots and the Maytals, John Brown's Body and Joshua Redman.
