Outstanding alumna lives philosophy of building personal brand  

ST. LOUIS (SEPT. 16, 2015) – The School of Communications Commencement speeches, scheduled to be delivered May 9, 2015 immediately following the main Webster University Commencement ceremony held at the Muny in Forest Park, were rained out. At that time, Eric, Rothenbuhler, dean of the School of Communications promised to make them available to everyone who attended the event. Transcript – 2015 Commencement Speech: Paaige K. Turner,  associate dean, School of Communications, Webster University

It is now my pleasure to introduce our Commencement speaker and 2015 recipient of the Outstanding Alumna Award Kathryn “Kate” Ewing.

Kate Ewing earned two degrees at Webster University, her BA in Media Communications in 2002 and her MA in Marketing in 2003. Rather than ending her relationship with Webster University, she decided to continue in a new role – and currently serves as an outstanding adjunct instructor. This is not, however, her full time job nor her only contribution to the Community or to the University.

Since graduating, Kate has held key positions of increasing responsibility in prominent Saint Louis firms such as Sigma-Aldrich and The Book Source. In 2013, she became the marketing manger for Mosby Building Arts where she is responsible for creating marketing strategies and budgets. In 2014, Mosby Building Arts was named the 2014 Remodeler of the Year by "Professional Remodeler" and exceeded its sales expectations with an increase of over 25 percent.

While we cannot claim Kate was responsible for all of that growth, what the faculty has seen in Kate indicates that she was at least responsible for some of it. Clearly others have recognized her potential and abilities as well. In 2009, Kate was a recipient of a St. Louis Business Journal Award “30 under 30” and in 2015 received awards for Best YouTube Commercial, Best Print Ad, and Marketing Director of the Year by the Home Builder’s Association, Midwest Region.

Excellence for Kate has not been relegated strictly to her interaction with Webster University or in her workplace. She is very active in the Saint Louis community and cultural organizations, serving as board member, advisor, or volunteer for COCA, KDHX, Gateway to Hope, City Academy and Saint Louis Earth Day.

But Kate's heart has stayed with Webster. She has established an annual scholarship at Webster University to benefit a student studying in the School of Communications in honor of her late father who recently lost his battle with cancer.

Kate knows the importance of networking and building a brand. She has demonstrated time and again that she has the skills and knowledge to do so. Kate lives the philosophy of building her own personal brand and the brand she builds in one of commitment to her community, to her profession and to her family…and we are honored to have her as a member of the Webster University Community.
