Film Series to Feature Two International Films in January

In January 2016, the Webster University Film Series will feature two acclaimed international films. 

The first film, The Assassin (Nie yin  niang), will play at the Winifred Moore auditorium beginning Friday, January 15. It will be shown nightly at 7:30 p.m. through Sunday, January 24.

The film is set in ninth century China. Nie Yinniang, who was abducted as a child, is raised by a nun who trains her in the martial arts. She becomes a skilled assassin who must choose between love and duty when she receives orders to kill her betrothed.

The film is in Mandarin with English subtitles. The Assassin (Nie yin  niang) earned awards at The Cannes Film Festival and was Taiwan’s submission for Best Foreign Language Film at the 88th Academy Awards®.

The second film, Aferim!, will be shown beginning Friday, January 29 and run through Sunday, January 31. It will also play at the Winifred Moore auditorium.

 Aferim! is set in Eastern Europe in 1835. A father and son with different outlooks on life search for a gypsy runaway slave suspected of an illicit affair with their nobleman master’s wife. Along their journey they meet Turks and Russians, Christians and Jews, Romanians and Hungarian, each with deeply rooted prejudices.

Winifred Moore auditorium is located at 470 E. Lockwood, Webster Groves, MO 63119.  Admission is:

$6 for the general public
$5 for seniors, Webster University alumni and students from other schools
$4 for Webster University staff and faculty

Free for Webster students with proper I.D.
