Communications: Undergraduate Academic Advising

It takes 128 credit hours — comprised of major requirements, general education requirements and electives — to earn an undergraduate degree from the School of Communications.
If a student plans to graduate in four years, the school recommends enrolling in 16 credit hours each semester (16 credit hours x 8 semesters = 128 credit hours).
Required classes and possible electives for individual majors can be found in the University's online Undergraduate Studies Catalog. Requirements cannot change from the catalog in place at the time a student enrolls. However, a student may elect to change to the newest requirements under a newer catalog if he or she desires.
Global Citizenship Program
In 2011, the faculty of Webster University approved the Global Citizenship Program (GCP) to replace previous General Education Programs. These requirements are intended to provide a general framework for undergraduate degrees outside of students' majors. The GCP course requirements are designed to ensure that university graduates have a broad field of knowledge and skills so they are prepared for global citizenship.

Most majors in the School of Communications require a Portfolio Review. It is a short presentation of class work to a panel of professors. Majors not requiring a portfolio review include: Animation, Film Production, Interactive Media and Speech Communications. Instead of a portfolio review, Broadcast Journalism and Journalism students must obtain an Internship Release form when they have finished BJRN 2850 Radio-TV News Reporting or one semester of JOUR 3300 Newspaper Production Workshop.
Most minors and certificates require 18 credit hours to complete. All courses for a minor or certificate must be taken at Webster University and no course can count toward both a minor and a major. There are no double majors within the School of Communications. A student majoring in the School of Communications may also have a minor in the School of Communications. A major that is offered with an emphasis, such as Media Literacy, is not also offered as a minor. For more information, please refer to the Undergraduate Studies Catalog.
- Sign up for a conference with an advisor about one to two weeks before registration.
- Arrive at the conference with a suggested schedule in hand. An online list of available courses, known as the course schedule, is posted about one month before registration.
- After a meeting with an advisor, a student will be given clearance to register online. Seniors with at least 90 credit hours may register the Monday of Registration Week. Juniors with at least 60 credit hours may register on Tuesday, and everyone else may register on Wednesday. During Registration Week, students will have access to online registration beginning at 5 a.m. on the day they are eligible to register (e.g. seniors with at least 90 credit hours on Monday).
- Register for classes. Be sure to select alternatives in case classes chosen are already filled
Students may still add a course the first week of class with an advisor's signature on an add slip. If the class has met, the student also needs the instructor's signature.
Students may drop courses during the first two weeks of the class, with a drop slip signed by an advisor.
After the first two weeks, students need awithdrawal form to be removed from a course roster. Reimbursement for this course is determined on a sliding scale. If a late withdrawal is requested after the withdrawal deadline, a student needs approval from the instructor, advisor and department chair. A late withdrawal may be granted in exceptional circumstances such as a serious illness or family emergency.
Students unable to complete a course may request an incomplete. A grade of Incomplete ('I') may be assigned by the instructor in situations where the student has satisfactorily completed major components of the course and has the ability to finish the remaining work without re-enrolling. The instructor determines the appropriateness of a grade of I, establishes the remaining requirements, and determines a deadline for course completion. These requirements for resolution of the I grade are generally documented with a 'course incomplete form.' It is a contract that spells out what needs to be done and by when. After one calendar year has passed, an unresolved grade of "I" (Incomplete) will become a "ZF."
Webster University distributes diplomas in May, August and December, although it only conducts its commencement exercises once a year in St. Louis. Students will not graduate or receive a diploma unless all graduation requirements have been fulfilled and they have filed a petition to graduate.
Complete the petition to graduate and submit it to a department associate by the designated due date for your anticipated graduation.
Students within six credit hours of graduation may participate in the May commencement ceremony by requesting permission to "walk" in the graduation ceremony from the dean. The written request should include:
- a statement outlining why you are requesting permission to participate in the graduation ceremony;
- a list of any remaining classes and their anticipated completion date;
- contact information including a mailing address, telephone numbers and email address; and,
- a printed copy of your degree audit.
Requests to "walk early" in the May ceremony should be sent prior to March 1 to:
