A group class is a dynamic social context in which many aspects of music making can be explored efficiently and enjoyably.  In this workshop, Carey Beth Hockett will present tools and tactics to help teachers get more out of groups.  Participants will learn how to make every child feel an integral part of the group, how to involve parents, and how to engage players of different standards.

This workshop is for violin, viola, and cello teachers.  Please bring your instruments and be prepared to play!   The activities will help everybody:

  • Improve their ability to focus and multi-task
  • Become more aware of themselves and others without becoming more self-conscious
  • Laugh very hard
  • Make lots of mistakes and not worry about it

Jeremy DittusCellist and composer Carey Beth Hockett joined the faculty of the Colburn School in 2009.  She has been actively involved in Suzuki cello in both America and Europe for over 40 years. She is well known for her creative work with groups of all sizes and has designed a course for teachers called Group Class Techniques. Her compositions include Amusements for String Quartet, a collection of short pieces designed to train basic ensemble-playing skills, and Diversions for Cello Ensemble, a series of pieces that include elements of body percussion and cello drumming along with normal playing. Hockett has served on the boards of both the European Suzuki Association and the Suzuki Association of the Americas and is now on the board of the International Suzuki Association.
