Can't Login to email account

99% of the time this occurs because the person has their caps lock on. If the caps lock isn't on, then back up the mail folder, bookmarks and addressbook and reload Netscape. If it still doesn't work call Ben Hockenhull or Sharon Hessler to check that you have the proper email password.

Can't print from Netscape

  • Backup the mail folder, bookmarks, and addressbook.
  • Delete the Netscape Directory.
  • Reload Netscape.
If it still isn't printing, delete and reload the printer driver.

Setting up email on Netscape Communicator

1. If they have a previous version of Netscape backup their bookmark file, address file and mail folder to your network drive.
2. Then delete the current Netscape folder and icon(s)
3. Load Communicator from the INS directory
4. After the installation finishes, start Communicator
5. A screen will appear that says, "creating a new profile", click next
6. Now, a screen appears that says, "enter your name and email address", in the box that says full name, enter your name.
In the box that says email address, enter the persons email address.
For example emailname@webster.edu, then click next.
7. The next screen says, "Choose a name and directory for your profile", in the box that says profile name, enter your full name. Then click next
8. The next screen says, "setup your outgoing mail server", in the box that says outgoing mail (SMTP) server, enter pop.webster.edu, and then click next.
9. The next screen says, "Set up your incoming Mail Server", in the box that says Mail Server User Name, enter your email name.
In the box that says Incoming Mail Server, enter pop.webster.edu, then click next.
10. The next screen says, "Set up your Newsgroups Server", just click on finish.
11. Communicator will now start.
12. At the top click on edit, then preferences.
13. The preferences box will pop up, on the right in the middle, where it says home page location, change it to HTTP://www.webster.edu
14. Then on the left, in the white box, click the plus sign next to Mail and Newsgroups.
15.Then under Mail and Newsgroups click on Identity.
16. The first 2 boxes on the right should already have the correct information.
In the third box, that says "reply to address" enter the same information that is in the email address box above.
Then in the organization box, enter Webster University.
17. Then on the left under Mail and Newsgroups, click on Mail Servers. In the box on the left that says "Outgoing Mail Server User Name", enter your email name. Then at the bottom click OK.
18. Close Communicator.
19. If they had a previous version of Netscape, copy the Bookmark file, Address file and the Mail folder, that you backed up in step 1, to the directory Program Files\Netscape\users\"emailname" - this last folder will be your email name.
20. Then start Communicator, at the top click on Communicator.
21. Then select Address Book.
22. Click on file, then select Import.
23. A screen appears that says "Netscape Messenger Import Utility" click on Communicator Address Book and click next.
24. A box will pop up searching for the address book file, at the bottom where it says files of type:
  • NAB FILES, click the down arrow and change it to HTML FILES.
  • At the top, click on the down arrow and choose the C: drive, then double click on the program files directory.
  • Then double click on the Netscape directory,
  • then double click on the users directory,
  • then double click on the "emailname folder",
  • then double click on the address book file.
It will add the address book, when it is done, click the X in the upper right corner to close it, then close Communicator and you are finished.

Setting up more than one email address
on Netscape Communicator

1. Click on start, go to programs.
2. Then go to Netscape Communicator.
3. Then go to Utilities, then click on user profile manager.
4. A screen will appear that says profile manager. Click on new.
5. A screen will appear that says "creating a new profile", click next
6. Now, a screen appears that says "enter your name and email address", in the box that says full name, enter your name. In the box that says email address, enter the persons email address. For example emailname@webster.edu, then click next.

Setting up email with Netscape Navigator

1. Load Navigator from the INS directory.
2. After the installation, it will ask you if you want to connect to Netscape, click on no.
3. Double click on the Netscape icon to start Netscape.
4. At the top click on Options.
5. Choose General Options
6. A box will pop up, at the top, click on the appearances tab.
7. In the middle where it says Browser starts with: change the home page location to http://www.webster.edu
8. Click ok
9. click on options again.
10. Select Mail and News Preferences
11. Click on the Servers tab.
12. In the box that says Outgoing Mail (SMTP) server, enter pop.webster.edu
13. In the box that says Incoming Mail (POP3) Server, enter pop.webster.edu
14. In the box that says POP3 user name, enter the persons email name.
15. Now, click on the Identity tab.
16. In the box that says Your name: Enter the persons name.
17. In the box that says your email: enter the persons email address. Ex. Jsmith@webster.edu
18. In the next box that says Reply-to-address, enter the same information you entered in the last step.
19. In the box that says Your Organization: enter Webster University.
20. Click OK and you are finished.

Win95 Upgrade instructions

  1. Go to the ins Directory
  2. Go to the win95 directory
  3. Then copy the subdirectory win95 to the c: drive
  4. Then go back to the ins directory and copy the novellclient directory to the c: drive
  5. Then go to the Ins\win95 directory and run the setup program
  6. After setup is complete remove files from the config.sys and autoexec.bat files
  7. Shutdown the PC and install a 3com NIC
  8. Reboot, the PC will autodetect the NIC.
  9. Delete the Microsoft Networks client
  10. Highlight IPX/SPX and click on properties, then click the advanced tab
  11. Set the frame type to 802.3
  12. Set maximum connections = 60
  13. Set maximum sockets = 6
  14. Then go to the novellclient folder you copied to the c: drive and run the setup program
  15. Reboot
  16. Delete the Rwin directory
  17. Delete the Netscape directory after you back up the Mail folder, the bookmarks and the addressbook.
  18. Then install McAfee, Wordperfect (if they previously had it, although if it's a win95 upgrade, WordPerfect should still work), Cars (the server is webster1), Office 97 and Communicator (copy over the bookmarks and mail and import the address book).
  19. Fill out an install sheet with the person name and charge them for McAfee and Office97 and give it to Sharon.

Windows Registry Problem

  • If you have a windows registry problem, you simply need to go to DOS, Run scandisk, then delete the Windows directory, then run defrag. Then go to the Z:\ins\wfw and run setup.exe
  • After windows reinstalls, reload all other programs.
  • You will not have any problem whatsoever with the network and you do not need to reload any network software.

Windows Protection error on windows 95/98

  1. If a 95/98 PC gets an error on boot up that says "windows protection error", something is wrong with the networking.
  2. You need to boot up in Safe mode.
  3. Open the My Computer icon and go to the C: drive.
  4. Find the admin folder and run the unc32.exe file.
  5. It's the one with the red X through it.
  6. This will uninstall the Novell Client.
  7. Then click on start; go to settings, then control panel and double click on the network icon.
  8. Remove everything.
  9. Restart the PC and redo the networking.
  10. For instructions on redoing the networking, see the document, windows 95 upgrade. These instructions are included in this document.

Windows Freezing

  1. If windows is freezing on a Windows 95 or 98 machine, Run scandisk and choose the thorough option. Then Run Defrag.
  2. Then right click on my computer and choose properties.
  3. At the bottom of the page that pops up, look and see how much memory they have. !6 megs is the minimum that they should have.
  4. If they don't have 16, they have to upgrade, if they do, it is recommended that they upgrade to at least 32 megs.

If they have a Windows 3.x machine,

  • Go to dos run scandisk, then run defrag.
  • Then type in dir *.tmp /s/p, this will display the directories that contain temp files.
  • The screen will stop scrolling when the information fills the entire screen.
  • Note the directories and push any key to scan further.
  • After noting all the directories, go into those directories and delete the temp files.

The directories that usually contain temp files are:

  • C:\windows\temp
  • C:\temp
  • C:\windows

Missing OLE information

If cars or any other windows program gives you an error about missing OLE information, you have a Windows Registry Problem.
You will have to delete Windows and reload everything. See the document titled Windows registry error.

Disable Windows98 Scrolling

1. Run REGEDIT (Start, Run, REGEDIT).
2. Find the following key: HKEY_Local_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\ Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer.
3. Within the explorer folder, click the Advanced folder once to select it.
4. Right-click an unoccupied area in the right-hand pane. Click New, then String Value.
5. In the name box that appears, type StartMenuScrollPrograms (all one word), then press Enter.
6. Right-click the name you just created, then click Modify. In the Value Data box, type FALSE, then click OK.
7. Exit REGEDIT

It should not be necessary to restart Windows. When you click Start and then Programs, your menu will now show multiple columns instead of a single column with scroll arrows, assuming you have a long Programs list.

Client 32 upgrade

rev. 5/16/97

Step 1:

  1. Before starting the upgrade, Verify PC has DOS 6.22 or upgrade it.
  2. Check for 20 MB of free disk space.
  3. Go into net.cfg and record the Base I/O, IRQ, DMA, AND IP Address, Node Name.

Client 32 Install

  1. From within windows from the menu choose file, then run, then browse.
  2. In the path choose z:\public\client\doswin32\setup.
  3. Then click ok.
  4. The first screen for the installation will come up, click on continue.
  5. Then click yes.
  6. Then click next.
  7. The next screen will say@ODI Driver selection@, Select 16-bit. Then click next
  8. The next screen will say AAdditional options@, Select SNMP. Then click next.
  9. The next screen says ASNMP Configuration@. click next.
  10. After the installation is complete click on return to windows.

Step 2:

RNSWIN51 INSTALLATION

  1. From the windows menu choose file, then run, then browse.
  2. In the path choose z:\ins\rnswin51\disk1\setup
  3. At the first installation screen click on continue.
  4. The next screen will say AInstall options@, Complete install will already be selected, click on continue.
  5. The next screen will say Aupgrade path@, it will already be c:\rwin, click on continue.
  6. The next screen will say ANetwork Driver Type@, click continue.
  7. The next screen will say AReflection NFS Client Setup@, click yes.
  8. The next screen will say ANFS as current Network@, click no.
  9. The next screen will say ASystem configuration warning@, click continue.
  10. The install will then start. After the install is done a screen will appear.
  11. It will say AAdd Physical Network Interface@, your current network card should be highlighted, if it isn=t, then select it and click ok.
  12. The next screen will say AKeep Network Interface Settings@, click yes.
  13. The next screen will say ABasic TCP/IP Settings@ In the Box at the bottom of the screen labeled, Apath to Hosts file@, change it from c:\wrqnet to c:\rwin, then click ok.
  14. Click on the Subnet Mask box, 255.255.255.0 should appear.
  15. In the box labeled PC Hosts Name enter the building, room, wall plate # click OK.
  16. The next screen will say AA Host File Does Not Exist@, click on yes.
  17. At Program Manager Groups Selection, click continue. The install for RNSWIN51 is finished.
  18. Click on exit setup.

Step 3

RWIN51 INSTALLATION

  1. From the windows menu choose file, then run, then browse.
  2. In the path choose z:\ins\rwin51\disk1\setup
  3. The first screen will say AReflections 1 for Windows Setup@, click continue.
  4. The next screen will ask you for the serial #, enter 001638053 and click continue.
  5. The next screen will say AReflection ReadMe@, click continue.
  6. The next screen will say AReflection Directory@, click continue.
  7. The next screen will say APrevious installation warning@, click continue.
  8. The next screen will say Auser directory@, it will already be c:\rwin\user. Click continue.
  9. The next screen will say AInstall Options@, Typical install will already be selected. Click on continue.
  10. If not enough disk space select BACK button, select Minimum Install, continue.
  11. The install will start.
  12. The next screen will say AProgram Manager group selection@, Check to see that the group says Reflections. Uncheck the HP3000 box. Then click continue.
  13. The install is finished. Exit to windows.

Step 4

Exit to DOS.

  1. If you can't exit windows to DOS, exit to DOS through the MS-DOS prompt.
  2. Insert our install disk into the floppy drive, go to the AA@ drive and run the install disk by typing install.
  3. Edit the system.ini file.
  4. In the windows directory under the 386 enhanced section add the line rnexecbypass=0
  5. save the file and exit.
  6. Edit config.sys and autoexec.bat then save each and exit.
  7. Add line Del c:\windows\temp\*.tmp edit the net.cfg file.
  8. Change the IP ADDRESS, IRQ, DMA AND BASE I/O and nodename Settings to those that you recorded at the beginning of the installation.
  9. MAKE SURE THE PATH SAYS C:\RWIN
  10. SAVE THE CHANGES AND EXIT.

STEP 5

When you are finished it should look similar to the following.

Intruder lockout Detected

  • If someone can't login because it says this account has been locked, then start the NetWare Administrator Program, find the persons login name, double click on it.
  • On the right click the Intruder Lockout tab, then uncheck the account locked box.

Setting up the Novell client on Windows 98

  1. Drag a copy of the novellclient folder from the network to the desktop.
  2. Then click on start, then settings, then choose control panel.
  3. Double click on the Network Icon.
  4. Remove both the Novell and Microsoft clients.
  5. Reboot the PC.
  6. Now open the Novellclient folder on your desktop and run the setup program.

Setting up Cars

  1. On windows 95 or 98 go to z:\ins\rwin95 and run the setup program.
  2. After the installation is finished, right click on the Reflections Icon and drag it to the desktop and let it go and select create shortcut here.
  3. Then change the name of the icon to cars.
  4. Right click on the icon and choose properties.
  5. A box will pop up, click on the shortcut tab.
  6. In the box labeled Target, you will see something that says:
    • "C:\Program Files\Reflection\r1win.exe"
  7. Click on the end of that line and hit the space bar once and type in cars.r1w
  8. The line should now appear as:
    • "C:\Program Files\Reflection\r1win.exe" cars.r1w
  9. Click on OK, then start cars.
  10. Click on Connection, then choose connection setup.
  11. In the box Host/Service name type in Webster1, then click on connect.
  12. Then at the top click on File, choose save as, then the save settings box will pop up.
  13. In the box that says file name type in cars.r1w, then click on save.
  14. Close cars, then restart it to make sure you set it up properly.

Fixing F1 and F2 key problems in cars

1. Start cars, click on setup and select Terminal.
2. Click on the Function Keys tab.
3. Click on the F1 key, under key string, change the to OP, this is case sensitive, it has to be capital.
4. Under Attribute, click on Normal.
5. Then click on OK and go to file and click on save Cars.
6. For the F2 key, do the same thing, except under key string change it to OQ.

WordPerfect error:
"Unable to initialize, not enough memory"

This error occurs on Windows 3.x machines do to a corrupted file. To fix it open the File Manager and go into the Windows directory and find the file WPCSET.BIF. Delete it, restart windows and the problem is resolved.

WordPerfect Shared Code Error

This error occurs on Windows 3.x machines.

1. Backup any WordPerfect documents in the WPDOCS folder, copy them to the temp directory.
2. Delete the WPWIN60 or OFFICE directories, depending on the version of WordPerfect the person has. Then delete the WPC20 directory.
3. Go to DOS, Run Scandisk. It will find some errors, click on fix or delete whichever option pops up and when the skip undo option pops up, select it.
4. Run Defrag
5. When Defrag is done, go back into windows and install WordPerfect from the INS directory.
6. When it is done start WordPerfect, if the shared code error comes up again, you have a windows registry problem and you will have to go to DOS and delete the Windows directory by typing in Delete Windows.
When it prompts you to delete, hit Y for yes. Then you will have to reload windows and all windows programs.
7. To load Windows make sure you are logged in, if not, go to the F: drive and type login and then log in.
8. Go to the Z: drive by typing Z:
9. go to the windows directory by typing cd\ins\wfw
10. Then type setup to start the windows setup program.
11. After setup is complete, restart your computer and go into windows and reload the rest of the programs.
