Gain Professional Theatre Experience in a Rigorous Lighting Design Program

From setting the scene and creating the right tone, to letting the stars shine on stage, lighting designers have one of the most important jobs in theatre production. Webster University’s comprehensive BFA in Lighting Design will give you the necessary skills and knowledge to stretch your imagination and collaborate with other talented artists and performers throughout your career.

Webster is proud to have an undergraduate Lighting Design program that allows students to take the lead on theatre productions, with faculty giving input only as advisors. Our students acquire independent, hands-on production experience to build meaningful work samples that help them stand out in the industry.

Work with Professionals in Theatre Production

As a student, you’ll prepare for Lighting Design careers by working with the Repertory Theatre of St. Louis lighting designers, learning from their mentorship, and building lasting professional and personal networks. The best designers in backstage jobs pass through our doors, and students get to work side-by-side with them.

Gain Professional Theatre Production Experience

There’s no better way to study Lighting Design than by working with our professional partners — including Opera Theatre of Saint Louis and the Repertory Theatre of St. Louis — on performances at the Loretto-Hilton Center for the Performing Arts. Each semester culminates in a portfolio review where students share their work publicly.

Collaborate with Professors and Organizations

We intentionally keep our class sizes small to give Lighting Design students impactful opportunities to work one-on-one with our highly experienced faculty, who are union-affiliated professionals. We also work with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra and Dance St. Louis to design our curriculum and productions, giving you even more chances to work on productions and meet Lighting Design professionals.

Benefit from Our International Partnership

Webster has an ongoing partnership with the internationally acclaimed Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, where you can study alongside renowned theatre production designers and experience backstage jobs in a lively international theatre scene.

Earn Scholarships for Your Lighting Design Degree

Webster offers a variety of scholarships exclusively for Lighting Design students. We are committed to helping you start your career with as little financial burden as possible.

Study in a Vibrant Arts City

As a student in the Lighting Design program at Webster, you’ll have many chances to take advantage of all that the city has to offer. St. Louis is a historic city with many opportunities to catch live performances throughout the year, and network with artists at our partner organizations.

“Every time I work on a new lighting project, I think about Peter (Sargent) and the different pieces of advice he gave. I look forward to using my degree to help bring light to the importance of arts and arts education wherever I may travel.”
