Adjunct Faculty - Director of Music
Alan Schilling is the Music Director for the Department of Dance at Webster University, St. Louis, Missouri, where he accompanies dance classes, master classes for visiting guest artists and composes music for various dance concerts. He has accompanied master classes for the Amy Marshall Dance Company, Giordano Jazz Dance Chicago, Martha Graham Dance Company, Pilobolus Dance Theater, River North Chicago Dance Company, Bill Evans, Ting-Ting Chang, and Carolina Marquez.
As a free-lance musician, he has performed as a percussionist in orchestras for Mikhail Baryshnikov, Houston Ballet, Joffrey Ballet and Rudolf Nureyev Ballet Companies, the St. Louis Symphony, Opera Theatre of St. Louis, Muny Opera of St. Louis, the Fox Theater and Timber Lake Playhouse orchestras. Schilling recently completed a month-long Turkish drum technique retreat in the Catskill Mountains, where he studied and performed with Raquy Danziger, Glen Velez and other visiting Middle Eastern Artists.
You can hear him on numerous recordings covering a variety of styles ranging from French cabaret to American folk and jazz, and classical recordings with the St. Louis Symphony (including “Ogoun Badagris” for percussion Ensemble - Nonesuch Records. Schilling began his career as a tap dancer at age four.
In his free time he enjoys bike riding, learning new drum techniques and spending time with his family.
