ILC 1090 -- Elementary Language: Level I: Mandarin Chinese
This course is designed to introduce students to the basic knowledge of the pronunciation and the structural and writing systems of standard modern Chinese - Mandarin Chinese. Students will acquire basic skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing. By the end of the first year, students should expect to have acquired the ability to write and converse at paragraph length on a variety of familiar topics, and manage in a number of practical everyday situations as well. ILC 1100 -- Elementary Language: Level II: Mandarin Chinese
Prerequisite: ILC 1090 Mandarin Chinese or equivalent.
This is a three-credit introduction to standard Mandarin Chinese, which is known as Putonhua in Mainland, and as Guoyu in Taiwan. The class is embedded with custom and cultural aspects with emphasis on four skills - listening, speaking, reading and writing. It introduces more specialized grammar and vocabulary to enable the learner to communicate in a wider range of situations. Upon completing this course, students should expect to communicate in certain topics such as talking about everyday life, weather, shopping, transportation, etc. Attendance and prerequisite of elementary level 1 are required. ILC 2090 -- Intermediate Language: Level I: Mandarin Chinese
Prerequisite: ILC 1090 and 1100 Mandarin Chinese or equivalent.
This is a three-credit intermediate level course about standard Mandarin Chinese, which is known as Putonhua in Mainland, and as Guoyu in Taiwan. The class is embedded with custom and cultural aspects with emphasis on four skills - listening, speaking, reading and writing. It helps learners understand how the Chinese language functions grammatically, how to use Chinese in real life, read it in the newspaper, and write it in a report/essay. Attendance and prerequisite of elementary levels 1 and 2 are required. [CUL]
