JAPN 1090 Elementary Japanese: Level I
An introduction to beginning Japanese, with focus on speaking and listening comprehension. The students will learn to speak socially and culturally appropriate Japanese, not a mere direct translation of English. They will learn the language and its culturally appropriate behavior through role-playing. Much of the classroom instruction is conducted in Japanese. Attendance is required. [CUL]
JAPN 1100 Elementary JAPANESE: Level II
Prerequisite: JAPN 1090 or equivalent. A continuation of elementary Japanese Level I with a focus on speaking and listening comprehension. The students will learn socially and culturally appropriate Japanese through role-playing. Writing and reading skills will be practiced in assignments. The students will learn “humble-polite” and “honorific-polite” expressions. It is strongly recommended that students sign up for the accompanying workshop, ILC 1101.01. [CUL]
JAPN 2090 Intermediate Japanese: Level I
Prerequisite: JAPN 1100 or equivalent. This course continues to develop the four basic language skills: listening comprehension, speaking, reading and writing. Culture lessons are interspersed among the language lessons. Final evaluation will be based on written assignments, periodic quizzes, a final exam and class participation, which is most important. JAPN 2100 Intermediate Japanese: Level II
Prerequisite: JAPN 2090 or equivalent. This course continues to develop the four basic language skills: listening comprehension, speaking, reading and writing. JAPN 2610 Intermediate Japanese Reading and Writing: Level I
Prerequisite: JAPN 2100 or equivalent. A continuation of 4th semester Japanese. Students will continue to acquire basic skills in speaking, listening comprehension, reading and writing. Culture lessons are interspersed among the language lessons. Final evaluation will be based on written assignments, periodic quizzes, a final exam and class participation, which is most important. JAPN 2620 Intermediate Japanese Reading and Writing: Level II
Prerequisite: JAPN 2610 or equivalent and permission of instructor or department chair. This course is a continuation of JAPN 2610. Students will word process their final essay. [CUL]
JAPN 2630 Intermediate Japanese Reading and Writing: Level III
Prerequisite: JAPN 2620 or equivalent and permission of instructor or department chair.
A continuation of JAPN 2620 with special attention on the drafting, writing, and rewriting process. [CUL]
JAPN 3090 Advanced Japanese
Prerequisite: JAPN 2630 or equivalent and permission of instructor or department chair.
This course provides a thorough review of Japanese linguistic structures and enriches the students' vocabularies. The goal is to strengthen previous language knowledge and to lead students to higher levels of proficiency in written Japanese, as well as reading skills. [CUL]
