THE HONORABLE HARRIETT F. WOODS
The Honorable Harriett F. Woods was a noted journalist, public servant, educator, and advocate for women. After a career in print and televised journalism, she served the State of Missouri as a State Senator. When she was elected Lieutenant Governor in 1984, she became the first woman to win statewide office in Missouri. After she retired from political office in 1998, Woods became a Fellow of the Institute of Politics at the John F. Kennedy School of Government and served as the president of the Institute for Policy Leadership at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. From 1991-1996, she served as President of the National Women's Political Caucus. Woods was a frequent lecturer and had been prolific in the media since her retirement both as a commentator on KWMU and as a writer. Her works included the book, Stepping Up to Power: The Political Journey of American Women.
