Learning Goals and Objectives for the Professional Writing Certificate
Program Goals
The certificate in professional writing is designed to offer students a range of opportunities to
- improve general writing skills, and
- understand and develop the ability to adapt to the different purposes, audiences, contexts, and conventions
involved in writing in a variety of non-academic settings, such as businesses, nonprofit organizations, government
agencies, and community groups.
Program Offerings
The certificate program offers writing courses, both lower and upper division, and language theory courses. Within each
of these areas, courses are sampled as part of the overall assessment effort.
Program Learning Objectives
Students who earn the certificate will be able to
- Analyze the purpose, audience, and context of a specific writing task and use that analysis to complete the
task effectively.
- Plan and write collaboratively with others.
- Critique writing (their own or others') based on rhetorical effectiveness as well as usage and style.
- Learn and adapt to the writing conventions different genres and requirements of various nonacademic
rhetorical contexts.
- Understand how cultural context influences the way language works.
