Here’s a chance to study microbiology at prestigious Fudan University--where you will work side by side with Chinese students--and take a class in Chinese culture and the Chinese language in the city that’s called the “Oriental Paris.” Leisure time will be easily spent in this sophisticated, cosmopolitan city, China’s largest commercial and financial center. Students also can take weekend excursions to the surrounding area.

Academic requirements the program fulfills
Microbiology (BIOL 3120 & 3121) is a requirement for the BS in Biology with an emphasis in biotechnology. For others, the microbiology course is an elective. The language and culture course (GNST 1400) is also an elective. The microbiology courses will be taught by a Webster St. Louis faculty member; the language and culture course will be taught by an English-speaking professor from Shanghai International Studies University.
Courses
BIOL 3120 Microbiology Lecture (3 credit hours)
The study of viruses, bacteria, fungi and protozoa. Emphasis will be placed on metabolism genetics, diseases, antibiotic resistance and host response to infection.
BIOL 3121 Microbiology Lab (1 credit hour)
The Laboratory section will be conducted at the Fudan School of Medicine. Laboratory exercises on the structure, nutrition, and growth of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. Includes isolation, identification, and classification of representative microorganisms. BIOL 3120 and 3121 MUST be taken concurrently.
Prerequisites
Two semesters (each including lab) of BOTH college Biology and Chemistry (Webster University courses BIOL 1550/155 , BIOL 1560/1561, CHEM 1100/1101, and CHEM 1110/1111, or equivalent).
GNST 1400 Civilization and the Arts: Shanghai Society (3 credit hours)
Since opening its gates to the West in the early 19th century, Shanghai has cultivated a modern sensibility. This interdisciplinary study in history and the humanities focuses on the city of Shanghai in both a historical and cultural context. Students will examine the art and architecture, philosophy, literature, politics, music, and theatre of Shanghai to deepen their understanding of civilization, human values, and individual creativity. A special feature of this class is that it also teaches Mandarin. The English-speaking professor is from Shanghai Institute of International Studies.
Cost
Costs payable to Webster University are estimated at around $5,000. This price includes a nonrefundable study-abroad fee of $250; Webster 2008-09 tuition, $3,675 ($525 per credit hour for 7 credits); and an estimated lab fee (program fee) of $1,1000 that covers housing (double accommodations), housing cleaning, student internet and support, welcome and farewell dinners, class-related local transportation in Shanghai, and visa application.
Other costs to be incurred by students: meals, approximately $1,000; and local transportation and activities, $200 - $300.
Not included in costs: round-trip airfare and personal expenses. (Round-trip airfare estimated at $1,700-$1,900; Webster students may be eligible for free airfare through the Webster World Traveler Program.)
Housing
Students will stay in an apartment complex near Fudan University (15-minute walk) and Shanghai International Studies University (10-minute walk).
Payment Method
Costs for the study-abroad fee, tuition, and housing will be added to a student’s Webster University account. Students from affiliate (WINS) institutions will be billed tuition at their home institutions.
Health Insurance
At no additional cost, Webster University provides basic accident and sickness insurance to program participants. The policy covers students throughout the world arranged through HTH Worldwide Health Services. Students should not cancel their existing policies in lieu of this coverage. International Student Identification Card
