Scholarship to Honor Prof. Art Sandler
The Arthur M. Sandler Endowed Scholarship Fund has been established in honor of Prof. Art Sandler, who died Aug. 9, 2008.
The scholarship will be awarded to a full-time undergraduate student studying Human Rights and with demonstrated financial need. Preference will be given to Human Rights majors in the College of Arts & Sciences.
A member of the Department of Philosophy since 1970, Art served at various times as President of the Faculty, Chair of the College of Arts & Sciences, Chair of the Department of Philosophy, and Chair of the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies. He is remembered as a gifted educator and activist for human rights--and, he would want you to know, a devoted fan of the New York Knickerbockers basketball team.
Art’s commitment to human rights activism and education reflected both his deep respect and compassion for other people and his family’s Jewish roots in Eastern Europe. In the 1980s, he immersed himself in working for human rights in Central America, especially in Guatemala, and this work inspired him to create Webster’s highly successful human rights curriculum, including one of the first undergraduate majors in Human Rights in the United States.
Art Sandler believed not only in studying but “doing” human rights. This fund honors his desire to support students willing to combine serious study with concrete action to build a more just global society.
