D. Jason Slone holds a Ph.D. in Comparative Religion from Western Michigan University, where he studied the cognitive science of religion
with Tom Lawson. Dr. Slone is interested in identifying the types of
religious belief and behavior that recur across cultures and eras, and
explaining those features in terms of the evolved psychological
mechanisms employed in their production and transmission.
Dr. Slone has two research projects in progress. One involves testing
the “theological correctness” (TC) hypothesis. The TC hypothesis claims
that folk religious concepts are more likely to be employed in on-line
religious thought than theologically correct concepts because the
former violate a small number of intuitive ontological expectations
about natural kinds (vs. the latter, which violate a large number) and
thus are easier to process, store, and retrieve from memory than
theologically correct concepts.
The second involves developing and testing a sexual selection account
of religious behavior based on costly signal theory (CST) from
evolutionary psychology. In this view, religious behavior signals to
potential mates that an individual possesses desirable characteristics
for mating (fidelity) and rearing offspring (parental investment).
Preliminary data obtained from recent studies support this hypothesis. |
