The emphasis on the basic sciences is essential to nurse anesthetists; therefore, the Nurse Anesthesia Program is part of the Department of Biological Sciences at Webster University.
The experiences embraced by the nurse anesthesia program include lifelong learning, utilization of research to guide practice, assumption of a professional and leadership role, and to always strive for excellence in clinical practice.
LIFELONG LEARNING
The graduates will have a completed all didactic and clinical requirements of the Nurse Anesthesia Program.
- Graduates will be able to document current, accurate, and comprehensive data, observations, and findings.
- The profession of nurse anesthesia is constantly changing. To search for
and develop the art and science of anesthesia is a progressive struggle within
each professional. Therefore, the underlying philosophy is to encourage lifelong learning and critical thinking in the practice of anesthesia.
- Webster faculties are committed to continuing education and research. That commitment promotes an environment of creative and innovative learning that residents are also encouraged to pursue.
RESEARCH GUIDED PRACTICE
The graduate will have completed all research requirements, and will:
- Read and integrate scientific theories into the practice of anesthesia.
- Function as a leader and scientific researcher in anesthesia, pain management, and related fields.
- Complete and defend a thesis that incorporates a comprehensive understanding of research methods and scientific practice.
PROFESSIONAL KNOWLEDGE AND LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT
The graduate will:
- Be able to discuss professional issues impacting the practice of nurse anesthesia.
- Demonstrate professional behavior
- Participate in local, state, and national professional organizations and activities.
- Maintain membership in the AANA.
- Accept responsibility for the scope of advanced nursing practice.
- Serve as a resource and teacher for patients, communities, and other health care professionals.
EXCELLENCE IN CLINICAL PRACTICE
The graduate will have completed all clinical and simulation requirements, and achieved competence in the advanced level and specialty clinical objectives. The graduate identifies the functions, and gains experience from, sole anesthesia providers in rural and underserved areas. The search for excellence is evaluated by the graduate who:
- Selects the appropriate equipment, pharmaceuticals, and tests for the administration of anesthesia.
- Performs a preanesthetic evaluation and physical examination of the patient.
- Establishes a rapport with the patient, family, and/or significant others for preanesthetic teaching, psychological support, and discussion of the course of anesthesia.
- Prepares the patient physically, psychologically, and physiologically for the administration of anesthesia.
- Develops an anesthetic plan reflecting the needs of the patient and within the standards of anesthetic practice.
- Identifies clinical problems that may complicate anesthesia care, at any point during the administration, management, and emergence from anesthesia.
- Recognizes and takes appropriate action for complications that arise during the course of anesthesia.
- Administers and manages a wide variety of regional anesthetics.
- Applies knowledge to ensure the basic safety of the patient.
- Evaluates and manages postanesthetic conditions related to anesthesia.
- Demonstrates the skills required for airway management and circulatory support.
- Functions as a leader during cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
- Maintains accurate records as related to Anesthesia and the administration of treatments and pharmacological agents.
