The Meaning of Prosperity

DeanAkande

Dean Benjamin Akande

There is a new measure for success in America today, it's calledprosperity. Prosperity is often accepted as the only measure of worth in our society. Yes, prosperity may create a person who is wealthier, more successful, but prosperity does not make a better person. Please don't misunderstand; I see nothing wrong with achieving personal success and there is nothing wrong with making money. But when we allow our quest for prosperity to lead us to overlook our greater responsibility to make a differencein our lives, our work, and in our communitythen we have lost our chance to achieve true success.

In this issue of NotaBene, you will read about other standout individuals who are making a real difference in their own significant way. Pam Nicholson, Chief Operating Officer of Enterprise Rent-A-Car, demonstrates how far determination can take you. In Pam's case, it's taken her to the top. You will read about Webster business students engaged in Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE), led by Dr. Debbie Psihountas, professor of finance. These remarkable students demonstrate the value of teamwork and the ability to win in the face of overwhelming competition. This issue also offers a telling story of one of our standout professors—Renee English. This professor of strategy left a legacy in China by preparing our Chinese students to become good managers and even better leaders. The result—two of her former students emerged to win the inaugural Capstone Competition and walked away with $10,000. And finally, we celebrate our 2004 School of Business Alumni of the year—Gennaro Buonocore, Chairman of Moving Pictures International, and Norma Clayton, Vice President of Supplier Management for Boeing Integrated Defense Systems—outstanding leaders whose youthful vigor and drive is influencing the aeronautical and entertainment industries.

Prosperity is the impactful influence on society by those who refuse to allow circumstances, or the fact that it's never been done before, to get in their way of success. And so, we salute these outstanding Webster family members for making us better, for making us relevant, and for teaching us the real definition of prosperity. Read on...
