InTurn: What People Say

Thank you for your interest in the School of Communications' internship program. Without employers willing to open their doors to promising students, this program wouldn't enjoy the success that it does.

We want qualified students to gain entry-level experience in their chosen field just as much as we want employers to experience the benefit of an employee dedicated to learning and achieving success.

This is where you come in.

Webster University's School of Communications always is searching for new partnerships to expand the number of real world experiences available to qualified students.

We ask that employers provide this entry-level professional experience, under the supervision of an expert in the student's chosen field of study. Supervisors will be provided with an evaluation to assess an intern's performance and regular meetings are suggested to ensure the best experience for all involved.

The Experience
Students participating in the internship program work under the supervision of an expert in their chosen field of study.

The idea it is to set up an opportunity where a student can learn from a mentor and receive feedback on their performance in a work environment. The student should be involved in duties similar to those of an entry-level professional.

Weekly meetings are encouraged to discuss projects, answer questions and provide the informal feedback needed for the student to perform well.

Supervisors are provided with an evaluation form to conduct a formal evaluation session midway through the semester and at the end of the term. Half of the student's grade for the internship program will rely on these reviews.

Internships can be paid or unpaid, depending on the company or organization.

The Facts
Students must meet academic prerequisites to be eligible to participate in the internship program. Those who enroll in the program attend monthly seminars with other interns from Webster University's School of Communications and are awarded college credit for their experience.

Students receive a letter grade — 50 percent of the grade is based on their performance at the internship site and 50 percent based on their academic requirements.

A minimum of 192 hours at the internship site is required during a semester. Semesters run from August through December (Fall), January through May (Spring) and June through July (Summer).

The Process
We here at the School of Communications wish to make the process of taking on a promising intern as easy as possible. There are five easy steps to make it happen:

1. Determine the commitment your company or organization has for an intern and complete the Internship Information Form to describe the internship position in detail.

2. Return the Internship Information Form to the internship program coordinator to enter your position into our database.

3. Respond to the student's inquiry and explain your desired application process and interview the prospective intern(s).

4. Make a hiring selection and communicate that selection to those you interviewed.

5. Complete the Internship Authorization-Site Form with your new intern and welcome them to the office.

Working with an Intern
1. Orient them to the office and your organization. Show them around the workplace and give them an overview of the company. Be honest about what you expect from an intern.

2. Give them real work and the resources he/she will need to do the job. Interns are looking to be challenged.

3. Offer ongoing support and plenty of feedback. An intern is looking to learn about the industry and, more importantly, make connections with someone willing to teach them the business.

4. Remember, this experience is a learning experience for the intern. Make sure interns have a supervisor who can mentor them as they embark on careers of their own.
