Onward! › Words from the Dean
Dear Alumni,
It’s September.
Experienced any nightmares lately about being in the university bookstore and finding that your books cost more than your car? Or have you had a quick anxiety attack thinking you missed the first week of Tuesday/Thursday courses? Wait! You’ve graduated! Wake up! You don’t have to go to class.
Ahhh … fall brings such sweet memories of going back-to-school. For most recent grads, this may be the first fall in 16 years they haven’t answered the call of academia with its accompanying stresses and worries.
You’ve met your goal. You’ve achieved a very significant landmark in your life — a college diploma. You’re a college grad (BA or MA.) No more worries, right?
Wrong. We know many of you have traded working at being a good student with being a good employee. Now you have the stress of your job, the stress of not having a job or the stress of knowing exactly when to take the next step in your Media Communications career.
We know about your concerns because you’ve told us. Although you’ve graduated from the School of Communications, your alma mater still wants to help. One source of support we’re sending your way is this on-line newsletter.

Click your way through the stories in this the second issue of SCAN — the School of Communications Alumni Newsletter. This publication was designed to connect you with what other alumni are doing. Read the articles to find tips about job hunting, success stories about alumni you know and features about alumni moving up in the world of Media Communications. There are stories of struggle, too; no one makes it to the top at the first sound of the career-starting gun … especially in the field of media. You’re not alone.
Another effort we’ve made to connect you with career help was to bring to campus Sue Ekberg, a St. Louis-based professional career coach. (www.careerfocusstl.com) In July, Sue spoke to 31 alumni and interns who attended a special presentation sponsored by the School of Communications and Webster University’s Alumni office. All St. Louis SOC alumni were invited. If you’d like a copy of Ekberg’s selected career and job search resources, click here. If you didn’t receive an invitation and would like to be included in future mailings, please let us know your correct e-mail and snail-mail addresses. Send the information to my associate, Courtney Arne, at arnec@webster.edu.
Watch for additional upcoming Webster University invitations and opportunities to focus on your career. Don’t forget: We want to help you move upward by staying connected.
And don’t lose any more sleep about those missed classes. Happy fall!
Sincerely,

Debra Carpenter Dean, School of Communications Webster University
