SCAN highlights School of Communications alumni who recently landed jobs in their field. Lindsey Timmerman (BA, Public Relations, 2005) works as an account executive for Salsman Lundgren Public Relations in St. Louis.

SCAN: How did you land your job?
Lindsey Timmerman: Last fall I did my internship with Salsman Lundgren Public Relations. It turned out to be an extremely lucky situation for me because one of the account executives was moving on to a corporate job and I was hired to take her place.

SCAN: When do you realize this was the career for you?
LT: Growing up I was pretty sure I wanted to be a lawyer or psychologist … and then I had my first public relations/communications class at Meramec and it just clicked. From then on I always knew that PR was the career for me.

SCAN: Any advice for those looking for a job?
LT: I think the most important thing to stress is the importance of networking and creating relationships with people. Going to networking events is not my favorite thing, but you just have to do it. And once you have a job, networking is still important. My agency survives by networking to get clients or by building relationships with people who will later refer potential clients.

SCAN: Any classes you wish you would’ve taken at Webster but didn’t?
LT: I really wish I had taken more internet/Web site/graphic design classes. I took the minimum required because it wasn’t really something I enjoyed that much, but those are the topics that are shaping the industry right now.

SCAN: Best on-the-job experience so far?
LT: Everything has been great so far. I have commercials that I have written for clients that are now airing on KSDK-TV, KDNL-TV, KMOX-AM, KTRS-AM, KFTK-FM and other stations. I coordinate print ads for all kinds of publications. I write articles for clients that appear in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch New Home Folio every week. I just love everything I do!

SCAN: Worst on-the-job experience so far?
LT: I can honestly say I have nothing to complain about. Things are stressful sometimes, but I work well under pressure and it’s all worth it.

SCAN: Company you’d kill to work for?
LT: Nothing specific … but down the road I would love to work for a large public relations agency or corporation in California.

SCAN: Person you most admire in your field?
LT: I admire both my bosses, Iris and Carol. They are successful women who started their business together 17 years ago. Since then, they have built Salsman Lundgren into a Top 10 PR firm.

SCAN: What Web site is your home away from “Home”?
LT: I spend most of my time on client Web sites, Crate and Barrel, Pottery Barn, Target and STLToday.

SCAN: Best way to fuel creativity?
LT: Everyone processes their thoughts differently and you have to do what works for you. I usually come up with my best ideas late at night … or while I’m driving and singing in the car … or when I’m talking things out with someone else.

SCAN: What’s on your desk right now?
LT: Computer, phone, printer, pens, pictures of my dogs/family/boyfriend, newspaper, tons of Post-its and papers EVERYWHERE.

SCAN: Favorite fringe benefit of your job?
LT: I love how I get to leave the office and go to client meetings. I have also attended some really fun things like media events. I’ve sat in the KMOX suite at the Rams game and I’ve sat in the Post-Dispatch suite at the Blues game. I’m hoping some Cardinals tickets will be in the works!

SCAN: Is your current salary more or less than you expected to be making at this point?
LT: It’s actually higher than I thought it would be … I had heard a lot of horror stories from other people. Plus, a lot of my personal expenses are taken care of. I’m just excited to be getting a paycheck!

SCAN: What’s on your iPod?
LT: I must be the only one, but I haven’t bought an iPod yet. My latest splurge was the pink Razr phone.

SCAN: Things you miss most about Webster?
LT: Besides all the people and professors, I really miss the night classes. I’m so much more of a night person. I loved taking classes at night … and then I would sleep in the next day. When I started working, I had to learn how to make myself a morning person.
