SCAN highlights School of Communications alumni who recently landed jobs in their field. Matt Majikas (BA, Broadcast Journalism, 2007, Sports Journalism Certificate) works as an account executive and on-air personality for Citadel Broadcasting in Worcester, Mass.

SCAN: How did you land your job?
Matt Majikas: I obtained an entry-level position with the promotion department in August 2007. I was offered a full-time position in the sales department in March.

SCAN: When did you realize this was the career for you?
MM: In all honesty I wanted to be the third baseman for the Boston Red Sox since I was little. But I needed a fall-back plan. My freshman year of high school I became a church lector and a woman I didn’t know came up to me after my first Mass and said, “You have an incredible voice, you should be on the radio …” She was right! Now I am “The Voice of Hanover Insurance Park” and an “Oldies 98.9” on-air personality.

SCAN: What’s the best way to prepare for an interview?
MM: When you go to sleep the night before just believe that everything happens for a reason.

SCAN: Any advice for those looking for a job?
MM: Half of the battle is personality. You may be the most qualified candidate but that does not land you the position. There is no substitute for a firm hand shake and a smile. And under no circumstances should you be trying to get a job that you will end up hating. Have passion.

SCAN: What classes taught you the most about your chosen industry?
MM: I will always say that the classroom can’t teach you what the real world can. For the most part that is true, but Webster certainly blurs that line. It wasn’t so much the content of the classes as the individuals teaching it. I get a little choked up when I think of the bonds and life-long friendships that I made with many of my professors. They taught me a lot, but it’s not so much about what they taught me as it is about the heart and passion they taught with.

SCAN: Best on-the-job experience so far?
MM: I sat down for a one-on-one interview with Carl Beane, the voice of Fenway Park. Arguably the defining moment of my young career.

SCAN: Worst on-the-job experience so far?
MM: Coming to terms with the harsh reality of the corporate world!

SCAN: Company you’d love to work for?
MM: The Boston Red Sox or WEEI Boston

SCAN: Person you most admire in your field?
MM: Brutally tough question … I would love to be a professional PA Announcer someday, but I greatly admire Peter Gammons of ESPN and Michael Holley of WEEI Sports Radio Network Boston.

SCAN: Best way to fuel creativity?
MM: Put on a baseball glove and find a field for about a half an hour. Also, don’t ever hesitate to bounce ideas off of co-workers. It never hurts to tap into other creativities.

SCAN: How many hours a week do you work?
MM: 50 hours give or take.

SCAN: Favorite fringe benefit of your job?
MM: Free stuff is everywhere at radio stations. I probably won’t have to pay to see a movie in New England for a long time.

SCAN: Is your current salary more or less than you expected to be making at this point?
MM: About right on. The good thing about being on the sales side of radio is that your salary is determined by how hard you work.

SCAN: What do you plan to do on your next paid vacation day?
MM: Attend my week-long family reunion on Lake Pymatuning in Andover, Ohio.

SCAN: Things you miss most about Webster?
MM: This question would require about three or four more pages and likely as many hours to fully answer. But what I miss most about Webster is the people. The unbridled passion that I encountered in every individual I met was just incredible. I miss the smiling faces but will always carry with me the genuine relationships that I developed.

At Webster there is an incredible sense of community. I still struggle with it today because I miss Webster dearly. To be 1,200 miles from home but feel like you are part of a family on a daily basis is well worth every last penny in tuition.
