SCAN highlights School of Communications alumni who recently landed jobs in their field. Amanda Sang (BA, Advertising and Marketing Communications, 2006) works as an advertising design manager at ALIVE magazine in St. Louis.

SCAN: How did you find out about the job you have?
Amanda Sang: I found out about ALIVE while working as a receptionist at Salon Dacota in college. The salon ran a few ads with ALIVE and I knew I needed to complete an internship for college credit. I went to alivemag.com and checked for internship opportunities and a contact person.
SCAN: How did you prepare for the interview?
AS: I didn’t go through the traditional interview process since I had already been working at ALIVE as a graphic design intern. I competed for the position along with two other girls for 30 days.
SCAN: What was the toughest question they asked?
AS: “What are some of your weaknesses?” This was very tough to answer for me because obviously everyone has weaknesses but it’s answering this question to where you make don’t hurt yourself and your chance of getting the job. Be prepared to answer this question :-)
SCAN: Any advice for those looking for a similar job?
AS: Do your research on the company before your interview. Spend time on your portfolio. Practice your portfolio presentation and be prepared to talk about your work.

SCAN: What Web sites would you recommend for those interested in your field?
AS: AdClubStLouis.org, AIGA.org, CreativeHotlist.com, DaFont.com, iStockphoto.com, FreeVectors.net
SCAN: What Web sites would you recommend just for killing time?
AS: Apple.com, Minted.com, ABC.com, Target.com, YouTube.com, stlouiscardinals.com (anything b/c you’re absorbing media and new ideas :-)
SCAN: What classes did you find the most valuable in preparing you for this job?
AS: Campaigns Class. Internships.
SCAN: Best way to fuel creativity?
AS: Consume other forms of media you don’t normally consume even if you’re not interested in the subject. Travel. Read. Take a break.
SCAN: In five words or less, how would you describe your working environment?
AS: Fast paced. Deadline driven. Exciting.
SCAN: Who is the person in your field you most admire?
AS: Anyone who has an upbeat, excited and positive attitude. Their demeanor is contagious and fun to be around.
SCAN: The best part about working here is …
AS: Having a printed piece of my work all over the city to show people what I work so hard on everyday :-)

SCAN: Who is your dream co-worker (real or fictional)? Why?
AS: Even though he’s not directly related to my field, I would like to work with Justin Timberlake. I would love to design his album artwork.
SCAN: The best way to start your day as a graphic designer is …
AS: With a coffee and a fun project/event/ad with a great concept to start with.
SCAN: Where do you see your career in 10 years?
AS: I would like to teach elementary art or graphic design. Or maybe open my own graphic design/paper/custom gift wrapping store. I have lots of ideas. We’ll see what I decide to do!
SCAN: My first big purchase since landing in this job was …
AS: The car I’ve wanted since I was 15 … a black VW beetle.
SCAN: What do you plan to do on your next vacation day?
AS: Paint
SCAN: I wish someone in college would have told me about …
AS: How important networking skills are. Even if it doesn’t come natural to talk to people you don’t know, it will be extremely valuable for your career in any field. Force yourself to make time and just do it!
SCAN: What do you miss most about Webster?
AS: All of the opportunities and resources that were offered, and of course Thailand!
