SCAN highlights School of Communications alumni who recently landed jobs in their field. Jill Moon (BA, Journalism with an emphasis in Global Journalism, 2005) is a reporter for The Telegraph in Alton, Ill.

SCAN: How did you land your job?
Jill Moon: I interned at The Telegraph in Spring 2005 and did correspondence work during the summer before I started a fall internship at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. An opening at The Telegraph came up at the end of 2005. The executive editor, Dan Brannan, called me for an interview.

SCAN: When did you realize this was the career for you?
JM: Immediately after coming to Webster as a junior. The Journal, Webster’s weekly student newspaper, published the first story I wrote for them on the front page. I was not yet on staff. I just submitted the story as a contributor. I had only taken Fundamentals of Reporting with Ed Bishop at that point.

SCAN: Any advice for those looking for a job?
JM: Do internships. Even if they don’t pay, they will pay off in the long run. My internship at The Telegraph didn’t pay.

SCAN: Any classes you wish you would’ve taken at Webster but didn’t?
JM: Community Reporting. Now I cover two Illinois communities.

SCAN: Best on-the-job experience so far?
JM: The best experience is hearing reader feedback. Compliments and praise are nice, but it is good to learn from constructive criticism, too.

SCAN: Worst on-the-job experience so far?
JM: The worst experience was writing five stories in one day on deadline, three of them being feature length.

SCAN: Company you’d kill to work for?
JM: The Center for Public Integrity’s International Consortium of Investigative Journalists.

SCAN: Person you most admire in your field?
JM: Amy Goodman from Democracy Now.

SCAN: Best way to fuel creativity?
JM: Drink a Red Bull and eat chocolate.

SCAN: What’s on your desk right now?
JM: AP Stylebook, Roget’s Thesaurus, Merriam-Webster Dictionary, numerous folders, a Rolodex, a telephone, papers, Post-its and a giant mug that says “Whatever” on it.

SCAN: Favorite fringe benefit of your job?
JM: Free tickets and access to places and events.

SCAN: Is your current salary more or less than you expected to be making at this point?
JM: It’s what I expected.

SCAN: What’s on your iPod?
JM: I don’t have time for an iPod!

SCAN: Any bumper stickers on your car?
JM: Yes, it’s a PETA sticker, www.meetyourmeat.com.

SCAN: Thing you miss most about Webster?
JM: Working with the St. Louis Journalism Review, talking to Ed Bishop in the morning by Sverdrup’s Big Bend/ Eager Road entrance and Webster Works Worldwide Day.
