SCAN: How did you land your job?
Jennifer Pickett: Hard work, determination and some luck.

SCAN: When did you realize this was the career for you?
JP: I’ve always had an interest in the music business, I’m a sucker for juicy celebrity gossip and I’ve always had a knack for writing. I guess you can say I was just lucky enough to find opportunities that allowed me to pursue my interests.

SCAN: Any funny interview stories to share?
JP: I wouldn’t say this is necessarily funny, but it would definitely fall in the “Go Figure” category. I got an interview for a sales job at KSDK-TV right after I graduated and managed to get myself in an accident on my way there. Sixteen hundred dollars and a massive coffee burn later, I didn’t get the job.

SCAN: Any advice for those looking for a job?
JP: Be persistent and always find a way to distinguish yourself from all other potential candidates!

SCAN: Any classes you wish you would’ve taken at Webster but didn’t?
JP: Looking back on it, I probably would’ve taken some classes in television broadcasting.

SCAN: Best on-the-job experience so far?
JP: I love the spontaneity aspect of my entertainment reporter position at 590 The Fan KFNS. Anything can happen, and I never know what’s coming next. It definitely forces me to think on my feet — all the while knowing that if I screw up or say something stupid I can’t go back and re-do it since it’s live and on the air!

SCAN: Worst on-the-job experience so far?
JP: Egos, egos, egos — especially when they’re not warranted.

SCAN: Company you’d kill to work for?
JP: In St. Louis: The Cardinals. Anywhere else: MTV

SCAN: Person you most admire in your field?
JP: Joe Buck, Bob Costas

SCAN: What Web site is your home away from “Home”?
JP: Eonline, Insidestl and People

SCAN: Best way to fuel creativity?
JP: Music. The louder it gets, the more effective it seems to become!

SCAN: What’s on your desk right now?
JG: In my line of sight: A flight schedule for a radio buy and a Chevy’s takeout menu.

SCAN: How many hours a week do you work?
JP: About 45

SCAN: Favorite fringe benefit of your job?
JP: I’ve had the chance to meet some great people and go to a lot of great events!

SCAN: Is your current salary more or less than you expected to be making at this point?
JP: I would say it’s just about where I thought it would be.

SCAN: What’s on your iPod?
JP: Where do I begin!? Let’s see … Dredg, Glassjaw, Coldplay, Maylene & The Sons of Disaster, Emery, Head Automatica, Men Women & Children, Melissa Auf der Maur, Deftones, etc., etc.

SCAN: Last movie you saw?
JP: Saw 1 and Saw 2. Twisted, disturbing and highly creative.

SCAN: Thing you miss most about Webster?
JP: I experienced such a close-knit learning environment while I was there, which was what I liked most about it. I also loved the fact that my professors simultaneously worked in the field they happened to be lecturing about, which brought up-to-date, real-world experience into the classroom.
