Webster Alumnus Nabs Local Award for Advanced Media — Arts/Entertainment

Dave Kaiser collected about half a dozen nominations in the past five years, but never seemed to take home the ever-coveted EMMY — until this year.

“I thought there was a chance I could win, but I didn’t necessarily expect it,” said Kaiser (BA, Video Production, 2003). “I was definitely surprised.”

Kaiser embarked upon his career in video production shortly after graduation, picking up freelance jobs around town whenever he could. He took a year off to volunteer with AmeriCorps but returned to the freelance work he loved.

“I been around nearly every post-production house in town,” Kaiser said.

Now five years into a career, his work is paying off.

The regional EMMY was presented in the Advanced Media — Arts/Entertainment category for Kaiser’s work during 2008 Fashion Week in St. Louis. The entry, “Project Design!,” was created for Charter Communications’ in-house network and Web site. It’s also available on DVD.

Kaiser collected the EMMY Oct. 4 at the 2008 EMMY Gala at Lumiere Place Casino and Hotel in St. Louis — a few weeks after undergoing knee surgery.

“My biggest concern was walking up the stage without hurting myself,” Kaiser said.

He made it to the stage without incident, but refused to leave without offering a plug for his alma mater. Kaiser had been to the annual EMMY Gala before and knew the room was traditionally dominated with alumni from other universities throughout the Midwest.

“I wanted to make sure everyone knew I was from Webster University and, in my opinion, it’s a darn good program,” Kaiser said.

“Above everything, it gave me really good hands-on experience,” Kaiser said.

The Mid-America chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) was chartered in 1962 and began honoring outstanding achievement in the region with local EMMY awards in 1976. The chapter includes markets in Missouri, Arkansas and Illinois.
