Note From The Dean
Dear Colleagues:
I just finished reading Gary's story on Dr. Meyers' opening remarks at the beginning of the academic year. It reminded me of the ongoing emphasis Dr. Meyers has placed on "community" in his 10 years of leadership at Webster University.

In the School of Communications, the concept of community grounds us, enfolds us and motivates us. The stories in this one issue exemplify our commitment to one another: Stories about coming together to discuss curriculum at the adjunct luncheon, hearing presentation tips from Bob Lauman at the Dean's Focus on Faculty, student leaders reaching out to SOC students in foreign countries to collaborate, the Media Center and Information Technology Departments working together to build a wonderful new TV studio for our students and faculty. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. There's also the story of Mindy Berkowitz and her industrious work study student, Libby Farmer, creating the biggest internship fair ever. We have much to be thankful for in our School.

But the strongest story of community this year is the one I saw first-hand in October as the School of Communications' faculty and students pulled together in the wake of the terrible automobile accident of our Audio Junior, Jennifer Brown. As Jenny struggled through her coma, the students prayed for her and her family, cared for each other and made sure Jenny's faithful dog Cheesecake was fed. Of course, none of us felt we did enough. You can't do enough in this circumstance because "doing enough" would be erasing the cause of the pain. We couldn't do that, and Jenny lost her battle for life. As our community grieves our loss, I want you to know that Jenny's mother and father and her minister were comforted by your thoughts, prayers and actions. You helped them remember what an impact Jenny made on so many others during her brief stay with us. Thank you for being the caring community in action that we talk about in print. You made a difference by caring.

Enjoy--
Debra

TV Studio Upgrade Brings Digital Video
To Students' Hands On Experience
When advanced video production and broadcast journalism students return to classes for the spring semester, they’ll be working in a new, all digital television studio. The facility is as modern as you’ll find on the job at most television networks and perhaps better than found at many commercial television production companies. The renovation -- the first for the teaching studio since it was opened in 1985 -- brings the equipment up to current state-of-the-art standards and is designed for further upgrade to the coming HD (high definition) format.
