Biography

Dr. Paula Hanssen is currently an Associate Professor of German/German Studies at Webster University in Saint Louis, MO where she teaches courses in German language, culture, literature and film, including a German cuisine course. She also teaches a 1-hour graduate language immersion course for teachers of German (COMM 5210), and the EDUC 3013 Practicum: K-12 German (3 hours) and EDUC 4986 Apprentice Teaching: K-12 World Languages: German (13 hours) as part of a supervisory team.

She earned the Bachelor of Music and Master of Arts in German from Texas Tech University, and the Ph.D. in German Literature from the University of Illinois Champaigne/Urbana. She has been teaching in higher education during her graduate work and her professional positions for 29 years, including Middlebury College summer immersion language school, St. Louis University in St Louis and in Madrid, and at Webster Vienna. Her research focuses on German women authors, German theater (Bertolt Brecht) and using drama in the classroom. She has presented extensively at state, national, and international conferences for American Council on Teaching Foreign Languages, Modern Language Association, the German Studies Association, and the American Association of Teachers of German.
