Getting Started with Your Course: Expectations and Administration

This page includes basic information you'll want to know as you begin teaching at Webster, and it outlines the University's expectations for all of our instructors.

Teaching Environment

Course Syllabi

Submit a course syllabus to the department chairperson or campus director by the given deadline. The course syllabus should also be distributed at the first class meeting. If your department uses the syllabus management tool Concourse, you should upload your syllabus to Concourse. For questions about Concourse and about designing your syllabus, you are welcome to consult this sample Concourse syllabus.

Attendance

Take attendance and report students in eight or nine week courses with two unexcused absences to your chairperson/campus director. For sixteen week courses, students’ unexcused absences must be reported for the first two weeks.

Contact Hours

Meet for the specified total number of contact hours for each course and meet for every scheduled class. To comply with accreditation requirements, classes may not be dismissed early. Classes canceled for any reason, including holidays and bad weather days, must be rescheduled prior to the end of the term/semester. Typical breaks are twenty minutes for every four hours. Contact hours for weekend courses do not include lunch breaks.

Grades

Enter grades online by the published due date each term. To enter your grades, log into Connections, click on the Faculty tab, and then click on Faculty Academic Services. More detailed instructions can be found on the Web Grading Instructions page.

Assessment and Course Evaluations

Participate in the academic assessment of courses, programs, and student outcomes as directed by academic department chairperson, program director, and/or campus director. Course evaluations are completed on paper or online depending on your department, program, school, or campus. Direct questions about course evaluations to your chairperson or campus or program director.

Accommodations

Make reasonable accommodations for documented students under the American Disabilities Act (ADA). You will be contacted by the Academic Resource Center if you have a student who meets these conditions. For further information, please visit the Accommodations page of the Academic Resource Center.
