The BM degree is a course of study that prepares a student for a professional career
in music, with a focus on pre-professional training.
You'll take courses in music theory and history, performance pedagogy and literature,
and conducting. You'll hone your talent through eight semesters of lessons on your
primary instrument. You'll perform in recitals, play in large and small ensembles,
learn to compose and orchestrate pieces, and find yourself a changed musician at the
end of four years of study. You may elect to study in Vienna for a term abroad in one of the musical capitals of the world. You'll benefit from
numerous guest master classes and performances on campus, as well as from musical
events and activities within our larger community of Saint Louis.
Students in this program present junior and senior recitals and participate in numerous
ensembles.
If you plan to major or minor in music you must complete an audition as part of your
application to Webster.
Special Study Opportunities
Student musicians get to hone their skills in Vienna, home to legendary composers Beethoven, Mozart and Strauss where Webster has had a campus since 1981. Students usually attend the Vienna campus in the junior year spring semester, where they study voice with a Viennese artist, take courses in music history - especially relating to Vienna's traditions, do special projects on opera or art song, and experience the vibrancy of Europe's musical capital.
