There's no one way to view Webster University. Just as we have no one word to describe the university, we can't use any single word to describe the excellence of the Leigh Gerdine College of Fine Arts, where the Department of Music resides.
Over and over we hear When I think of Webster, I think of the arts. We are Saint Louis' arts university! The Department of Music is proudly and widely known for distinctive programs that combine outstanding academic and performance experiences within a broad, challenging educational environment. We take seriously our part in living out the university's mission: transform students for global citizenship and individual excellence. You'll find transforming challenges in our classes, lessons, and ensembles. You'll find your world view expanded and enhanced through study abroad, guest artists, and master classes. Nurturing, friendly, real . . . these are words that describe Webster.
Here are more reasons that we are true destination school:
Webster is an arts-centered university. Presidents and trustees support the arts and believe in the importance of fine arts programs and education.
Webster boasts an enviable tradition in the arts, including flexible academic programs for students.
Webster's suburban setting and Midwestern location mean a close-knit, friendly campus. But the wonders of a larger city are just ten minutes away.
Webster makes international travel and education the norm for students, rather than the exception.
Webster's tuition makes us one of the least expensive private schools in Missouri, Kansas, Iowa, or Illinois.
Webster's music faculty are outstanding professional practitioners who love to teach. You have close working relationships with professors who practice their craft daily.
Webster University is an All-Steinway School, one of fewer than 125 in the world.
The Department has been a full member of the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) for the last half-century, an important marker of our standing among music departments in the US.. Other institutional memberships include the Music Teachers National Association, Opera America, the Missouri and Illinois state music teachers associations, and League of American Orchestras. Our faculty are leaders in various professional associations, unions, and guilds. Our roster of guest artists adds breadth and depth to our degree programs.
Samantha Schmid, a 2011 graduate in voice, says "From the second I stepped onto Webster's campus, I have felt at home, like part of a family. The Department of Music shares a solid bond because of its size and the cozy feel of Thompson House; but even as the Department expands, there is still the fundamental sincerity of people who care about each other. Creative people could not be more different, and my time at Webster has showed me that these differences are sometimes what unites us the most. Across the spectrum of disciplines, whether you're a composer, jazz pianist, vocalist, violinist, teacher, ad infinitum, Webster provides a support system that you don't find at other schools. There is no cut-throat environment here; everyone is encouraged to grow as an artist and musician in a manner that promotes confidence, inspiration, and success."
