Placement Audition Materials
Membership and placement in Webster Instrumental Ensembles is determined through auditions, which are open to all qualified students at the University. These auditions will determine placement and seating for all the Instrumental Ensembles. Auditions are open to all Webster University students, regardless of major. We encourage everyone to be part of the exciting musical culture available on the Webster campus!
There are two types of Audition Materials - Choose which materials to use accordingly. For full audition information, click on the AUDITION PROCEDURES link below. GENERAL AUDITION MATERIALS are recommended for non-Music Majors. ADVANCED AUDITION MATERIALS are required for all Music Majors and recommended for those seeking additional placement in the WUSO or advanced placement in the WUWE. Please note that the ADVANCED AUDITION MATERIALS are significantly more difficult. Please download the materials that pertain to the correct ensemble.
Auditions for Woodwinds, Brass and Percussion take place the Sunday before thefirst week of classes of the fall term. Auditions for Strings take place the first Tuesday evening during the first week of classes. All audition are heard by the conductors and a a panel of appropriate studio teachers. Each audition is seven minutes in length. Students are requested to perform solo material of their choice which demonstrates both the technical and expressive qualities of their performance, not to exceed three minutes in length. Students are also required to prepare a set of excerpts which are available online (see below) and in the lobby of the Thompson Music Building.
Students may sign up for an audition time in the lobby of the Thompson Music Building on a signup sheet that will be posted no later than August 15th. Audition results will be posted on the Instrumental Ensembles Board, located on the first floor of the Thompson Music Building shortly after the completion of all auditions. Musicians will be placed in the appropriate ensemble according to instrumentation and student need.
