Academic Advisor Comments

Congratulations on your decision to pursue your Master’s degree with Webster University.  Our programs are fully accredited and are geared to the working professional.  We make every effort to provide a sound academic program that will help you advance in your current career but will also prepare you for future career changes.

You may find it challenging initially to balance your responsibilities at work, home, and school.  However, as you get into your program and develop a plan to coordinate your studies with your other responsibilities, it will get easier.  Also, you may have additional questions about the program or your program plan of study.  As Academic Advisor, I am available each week at Ft. Sill to assist with any academic questions or problems you may have.  Call the Webster Office (353-5766) for my schedule; if you cannot come in at my scheduled time, email me at sseymor@aol.com for an appointment.

Please refer to the next page for general information that you may find useful as you begin your program.  Come by to see me if I can help you in any way.

Registration:  Registration information usually begins at least by the seventh week of each term.   You are encouraged to come in to the office as soon as possible to enroll, or you may enroll online at www.webster.edu.  You should order your books as soon as possible after you enroll so you can properly prepare for your initial class meeting the next term.  Be sure to use the ISBN number when ordering to insure you get the correct edition.

Professional Faculty:  We actively seek faculty who are practicing professionals in their field.  This provides a blend of theory and application that our students appreciate.  Many of our faculty have been with us for a long time.  However, we continue to monitor our program to insure that you are always getting a high-quality graduate program.  We welcome informal student feedback, and we conduct occasional formal faculty evaluations to get your feedback.

Library Resources:  Extensive resources are available through the Webster Library home page on the Internet (www.library.webster.edu).  Although you may often surf the Internet, you are encouraged to use the Webster Library Passports access to insure that you are accessing academically sound sources.  Also, other library services are available through the Library site.  Your Webster University student number is required to access the commercial databases free of charge or to use the other library services.  Your Webster student number is on your registration forms.

Class Absences:  We realize that as working professionals you may occasionally have conflicts that prevent class attendance. However, it is the student’s responsibility to notify the instructor and get the special assignments required for missed classes.  Legitimate absences should not adversely affect your grade if you satisfactorily complete the special assignments and stay current with your class preparation.

Plagiarism:  We expect our students to do their own work and properly document any specific facts, ideas, etc. obtained from other sources and used in Webster papers. Plagiarism in many university programs has greatly increased with the ready access to material on the Internet.   Although we believe most of our students would not resort to plagiarism, we do take steps to try to insure that does not occur.  The penalty for plagiarism is an F in the class and possible dismissal from the program.

Grades:  Our faculty are expected to communicate clearly at the beginning of each term their grading policies and general performance standards.  They are to record the grade a student earns based on those policies and standards.  As a graduate student, you are expected to be familiar with the requirements in each class as well as the grading and retention policies in the Webster University catalog.  You may check your grades using your student ID number at www.webster.edu under Academics.

6000 Integrated Studies Project:  The MA programs require completion of an integrated studies course at the end of the program in lieu of a comprehensive exam.  A research project in the core area is completed to provide an opportunity for the student to demonstrate that learning has indeed occurred and that some new and useful knowledge can be generated through the capstone research study.  A 6000 handout should be obtained from the Academic Advisor or from the Webster Ft. Sill web page early in your program so you can be thinking about potential topics as you complete your core courses.
