Graduate Assistant
Multicultural Center and International Student Affairs Department (MCISA)

Webster University is seeking a graduate assistant in the Multicultural Center and International Student Affairs Department (MCISA). This individual assists international students through outreach, counseling, and programming. The Graduate Assistant is responsible for developing, directing, and implementing programs and activities, and supporting the retention-related needs of international and underrepresented students. The position reports to both of the Assistant Directors of the MCISA. This position has an expected time commitment of 20 hours/week, including office hours, meetings, and program attendance.
Responsibilities Include:
• Advises and assists enrolled international students and American minority students on personal and cultural adjustment matters, from their arrival through their graduation.
• Counsels and advises international and American minority students on a wide range of issues including; university polices and procedures; career, educational, and personal matters; cultural adjustment; and academic advising. Makes referral to other university departments or outside resources, as appropriate. Provides workshops and seminars for international students on issues of importance, such as employment and cultural adjustment.
• Assists in coordinating cultural, recreational, educational, and social programs for the general student populations. Programming is intended to promote understanding of the cultures represented by the multicultural and international population at Webster University campuses and to promote an appreciation of diversity.
• Works with MCISA staff to plan, coordinate, and implement a thorough orientation program for new international students (in conjunction with larger University orientation programs) designed to facilitate their personal and academic success.
• Provides a supportive welcome for all new international students and minority students, with services such as airport pick-up and trips to local resources, agencies and cultural institutions.
Qualifications:
• Bachelor's degree
• Acceptance to a graduate program (ongoing enrollment is condition of employment)
• Experience in planning cultural programming: knowledge of program production, promotion, budgeting; creativity for initiating new programs;
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to relate and work well with students
• Demonstrated familiarity with and sensitivity to cultural diversity concerns
• Ability to work weekends and nights as the job requires
Compensation:
Stipend of $3,555.00 for a four-month appointment. Additional summer work at an hourly rate is possible.
Part-time graduate student tuition benefit, not to exceed 9 credit hours/for the Spring 2010 semester.

Applicants with substantial collegiate teaching experience who hold an earned doctorate are preferred. Candidates with a Master’s degree in Music and a substantial record of outstanding teaching or professional choral experience may be considered.
Director of Choral Activities. The successful applicant will conduct one or more of the University's choral ensembles; teach graduate and undergraduate music education courses; supervise student teaching; collaborate with instrumental music faculty; promote the choral program on a local, regional, and national level; engage in student advising activities; and oversee the music education component of the department's curriculum. Additional assignments may include teaching courses in support of the music program and other duties assigned by the Chair of the Department of Music. Faculty members are expected to engage in appropriate creative and scholarly endeavors, and to serve the profession and the university.
The Leigh Gerdine College of Fine Arts is a nationally and regionally recognized leader in the education and training of young artists in the studio and visual arts. Centered in an outstanding Liberal Arts University, the College seeks outstanding artists, teachers and scholars dedicated to the synthesis of the arts within a creative enterprise that encourages exploration creativity at the highest level. The Opera Theatre of Saint Louis and the Saint Louis Repertory Theatre are resident professional organizations on the Webster University campus.
The Department of Music includes 125 undergraduate majors and 25 graduate students. Eleven full-time faculty members are augmented by over 60 adjunct faculty from the Saint Louis area. The Department presents over 125 performances each year, and considers Saint Louis its urban classroom.
