All questions about the Graphic Standards should be directed to the Office of Marketing at marketing@webster.edu, 314-968-7140.
Why is it important to follow the Graphic Standards?
Graphic Standards, applied correctly and consistently, enable us to project a strong, effective identity for Webster University and help to prevent confusion among our audiences.
Using the University’s official symbols correctly and consistently is an important part of the branding process, enhancing Webster’s image as a quality educational institution.
Where can I download the logos?
Logos are available at http://www.webster.edu/marketing. This is the official site to use when downloading logos. Do not scan them from other reproductions or download them from other Web sites. Reproduction quality will suffer if you do. Also, remember that it is not acceptable to “build” the logo on your computer. If you need assistance in downloading a usable file, contact the Office of Marketing at 314-968-7140.
What has happened to the seal of the University? Can I still use it?
The seal of Webster University has not been changed. It is not a part of the logo, nor should it be used as a logo. The seal should only be used on official University documents, such as diplomas, transcripts, official records, programs and invitations for formal academic events, and legal binding documents. It is usually not appropriate to use it on forms. It should never be used in place of the official Webster University logo. Permission to use the seal must be granted by the Office of Marketing at 314-968-7140.
Once permission has been granted, proper reproduction files or materials will be made available. Do not scan the seal from old documents. It often results in poor quality reproduction.
Can I create a secondary logo for my school or department?
No, there is only one logo for Webster University.
Putting the Webster University name with any other symbol creates another logo and also creates confusion with our audiences. The official logo must appear on all publications and documents. Secondary symbols may be used as art or graphic elements, but should be placed far enough away from the logo so that each stands alone. Approved secondary logos are available from the Office of Marketing.
Does the new logo have an icon with it?
No, the new logo is a logotype, using Webster University as a stand-alone image. No other images should be put with the logo.
Do I have to use the TM or Registration marks when using Webster’s logos and symbols?
Trademark and registration marks are not necessary when used on official University stationery, envelopes, business cards, advertising and formal invitations. All other applications should use the appropriate TM or R marks.
What color is the Webster University logo?
The official Webster University logos may only be reproduced in Pantone®280, Pantone®136 and/or black. They may also be properly reversed out of a dark color. No other colors are permissible.
How do I change the color of the logo to match my document?
You don’t. Webster colors are PMS 280, PMS 136 and/or black, or reversed out of a dark color. No other colors are permissible.
Our department has its own logo. Where do I include it on our letterhead, business cards and notepads?
There is only one logo for Webster University. That is the logo that should be used, as shown in the Graphic Standards Manual, on official stationery and other items. In most cases, placing another graphic symbol on the stationery detracts from the clean design and becomes a distracting element. However, in the case of a few departments that have symbols that are already branded with the audience, permission may be granted to use the symbol as a secondary element, possibly at the bottom of the page.
Please check with the Office of Marketing before adding additional elements. University funds may not be used for designs that are not in compliance with the Graphic Standards.
When I’m typing a letter or memo, do I have to use Sabon, or can I use Garamond, Times Roman, or another typeface?
The suggested typefaces are for documents intended for external use to aid in the branding effort. But you are not bound to use any particular typeface. Please avoid using cute, or trendy, fonts such as comic sans, copperplate, script fonts or anything that would not represent the University with dignity.
May I add my department’s name underneath the logo?
Depends. Only approved identification lines specified in the Graphic Standards Manual may be placed beneath the logo. These traditionally represent specific colleges or schools. Others may be added as the standards evolve. Acceptable secondary logos are available from the Office of Marketing.
I’m preparing a formal invitation for a department reception. Do I add the new logo, or can I use the University seal?
The official University seal should only be used with official academic documents such as transcripts, diplomas, formal academic events and legal binding documents. In the case of a department reception, it is proper to use the University logo. Remember to check with the Office of Marketing if you wish to use the seal.
I’m having trouble downloading a logo from the web. Why won’t it work?
Because the University has a wide variety of computers and software programs, some people may have difficulty. Some computers and software programs are simply outdated and not capable of receiving high resolution files. If you experience difficulty, please consult the Office of Marketing. Remember, it is incumbent upon everyone to be sure any document they produce projects the University’s image with quality.
I’m in a hurry. Why can’t I just “build” the logo? Why do I have to get the proper file from the official Web site?
“Building” the logo will not reproduce the logo accurately. The logo was designed by Webster’s graphic designers with specific spacing requirements and alignment of characters.
Simply eyeballing it and then reproducing it will invariably produce differences that may be minor, but will detract from the design and its branding capability. “Building” the logo also takes time that might be used more productively.
I still have a box of stationery and a lot of business cards left. Do I have to change them all to reflect the new logos?
Eventually, yes. But you have time. In order to accommodate budgets and use resources efficiently, you have until July 1, 2009, to use up your existing inventory of stationery and other supplies. The President requests that you use as much of your old inventory as possible before ordering new supplies.
What about signage? Are there any standards for signs that need to be made for either the interior or exterior of buildings?
Yes. If you need a sign made for either the interior or exterior of a building, consult first with Facilities Management. Many signs will need to include the proper logo, and will need to conform to specific governmental requirements.
Do not order signage without checking with Facilities Management.
