BM in Music: Jazz Studies-Performance
The Jazz Studies program is based around the small group performing experience for vocal and instrumental jazz majors (piano, guitar, bass, drums, trumpet, trombone and woodwinds).
Jazz students participate in jazz combos, Big Band or Jazz Singers. In addition to core music classes, students study improvisation, jazz theory, scoring and arranging, jazz pedagogy and history. Two tracks are offered for the BM program: Performance (instrumental or vocal) or Music Technology. The latter includes MIDI techniques, studio recording and related courses.
Students work directly with a faculty mentor on graduate projects. Paul DeMarinis, director of jazz studies, is an internationally known saxophonist and composer. Recent guest artists have included Carl Allen, Lynne Arriale, the Either Orchestra, David Friesen, the David Liebman Quartet and Oregon.
If you plan on majoring in art, dance, music, or theatre, you must complete a portfolio review or audition as part of your application to Webster.
