Opera Studio Presents its Annual Performance- 1/18/13

The Webster University Opera Studio is a fully staged and costumed opera production, with orchestra.  Voice majors and other voice students, freshmen through graduate students, participate in Opera Studio each semester, and the technical staff consists of students from the Webster Conservatory of Theatre Arts. Costumes and props are from Opera Theatre of St. Louis, and the St. Louis Repertory Theatre, both of which are housed on the Webster campus. The first scene is from one of Mozart's greatest comedies, "Cosi fan tutte," or, Women are like that. "Iolanta" is the story of a blind princess who regains her sight; and "Werther" tells the story of a poet hopelessly in love with a married woman, Charlotte. "The Merry Widow" is a lighthearted operetta, and some of the tunes are probably familiar to everyone, whether they have seen the show or not. There are beautiful waltz tunes, including the famous "Merry Widow Waltz," the song "Maxim's" sung by the romantic male lead (Jimmy Stevens), and several dances performed by the Webster Dance Department and the Bulgarian Spirit Dance Group of St. Louis. Nathan Troup, from The Boston Conservatory is the stage manager; and Scott Schoonover, well-known Artistic Director and Conductor of the local Union Avenue Opera, conducts the Webster Opera Orchestra, made up of Webster students, faculty, alumni, and other professional players.
