K.C. Star: DOE Grant to Webster Addresses TESOL in K.C. Schools
Only 29.5 percent of U.S. teachers with English language learners in their class have training to teach them effectively, according to the U.S. Department of Education. That's what the recent five-year, $1.9 million DOE grant to Webster University aims to address in Kansas City, Mo., schools.
The Oct. 2 Kansas City Star elaborates on the program, with its article following Webster student and Kansas City Public School teacher Amy Teeple, both in the classroom and as she attends Webster University's Kansas City campus location for courses toward certification in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). Dan Hellinger, Webster University professor of political science, appeared on Al Jazeera's "Inside Story: Americas" on Oct. 1 to discuss Sunday's elections in Venezuela. You can see the story here. Separately, on Sept. 27 Hellinger was an invited lecturer for the forum, "Are Venezuela and Bolivia Experiencing a Sustainable Democratization of their Natural Resource Wealth?" at The School of Public Studies, University of Ottawa, Canada.
