Opera Studio Presents “Spring Scenes”- 4/19/13

Webster University's Opera Studio presents “Spring Scenes” at 7 p.m. on April 19 and 20 at the Community Music School.  The Repertoire includes: “The Magic Flute” by Mozart; “The Marriage of Figaro” by Mozart; “Don Giovanni” by Mozart; “Der Rosenkavalier,” by R. Strauss; “Street Scene,” by Weill; “Porgy and Bess” by Gershwin; “The Mikado” by Sullivan; and “Dialogues of the Carmelites” by Poulenc.

In its spring performance, Webster Opera Studio presents short scenes from major operas and operettas, directed by Alice Nelson, Webster faculty member. Scenes range from 18th-century Mozart comedy, to the tragedy of a group of Carmelite nuns during the French Revolution by 20th-century composer Francis Poulenc. Emma Sorenson, a Webster University senior and holder of the James Nigh Scholarship in Opera, is featured as Octavian in the beautiful presentation of the Rose scene, from “Der Rosenkavalier.” “The Mikado,” a Gilbert and Sullivan favorite, brings British comedy to the mix. Pianist is Nancy Mayo, staff pianist at Webster, and pianist for Opera Theater of St. Louis.
