Gorloks Fall in NCAA III Championship Opener

The baseball lost to Kean University, pushing it into the losers bracked. In order to stay in the competition, the team has to win every remaining game in the tournament.

APPLETON, WI, MAY 24, 2013 - The Webster University baseball team lost to the Kean University (NJ) Cougars, 14-8, in the NCAA III Baseball Championship first round, on May 24, at Fox Cities Stadium in Appleton, WI.  Webster fell in a hole early, came back to take a lead, but couldn't hang on as the Gorloks find themselves in the elimination bracket.

Webster (36-11), ranked 12th nationally, will face Manchester University (IN) in a 1:15 p.m. contest on May 25, back at Fox Cities Stadium.  The 9th ranked Spartans (39-6-1), lost 6-5 in 10 innings to the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in first round action.

Kean took a 2-0 to start the game with a leadoff walk from Webster starter Steven Dooley (SR, Oran HS, MO), followed by double and a single by the Cougars.  The Gorloks came back with three in the bottom of the third to pull ahead.  Singles by Ian Foege (JR, Eureka HS, MO) and Ryan Hall (JR, Central Arkansas, MO), and an error on a groun ball by Cody Stevenson (SR, Centralia HS, IL) loaded the bases.  A Corey Lasky (JR, College of Lake County, IL) groundout scored Foege and another Cougar error allowed Hall and Lasky to score.

The wheels came off for the Gorloks in the Kean sixth, after the Cougars had tied it up with a solo run in the fifth.  Dooley allowed a walk, double, and single to start the inning.  Giving way to Ryan Martinez (SR, Illinois Valley CC) and then Brett Buchanan (JR, Willowbrook HS, IL), the Cougars turned two more singles, another double and an error, into a 9-3 margin.

Kean added single runs in the seventh and eighth.  The Gorloks tried to rally with one out in the eighth with two walks and two singles, cutting the lead to 11-5, but the Cougars added three more runs in the top of the ninth to make it 14-5.  The Gorloks had one last gasp in the bottom of the ninth, scoring three runs.  Mike Rainbolt (SR, Kankakee CC, IL) singled in Hall, Charlie Gandolfi (SO, Mundelein HS, IL) walked in Stevenson, and a Mitchell Bonds (SR, Kankakee CC, IL) single scored Rainbolt.  The Gorloks still had the bases loaded before making the final out.

Dooley, the ABCA Central Region Pitcher of the Year, took the loss for the Gorloks and is 10-3 on the season.  It was announced on Thursday evening that Dooley had also been voted to the ABCA All-American Third Team.  Dooley becomes the third Webster pitcher in the last four years to earn a spot on the ABCA All-American teams.

Ryan Hall finished the game two for three, with a walk for Webster.  Hall has 20 hits in his last 44 at-bats and has raised his average from .274 to .326.  Rainbolt was two for five, with three RBIs and two runs scored.

The Gorloks will now hope to stave off elimination on May 25 vs. Manchester.
