The 2013 Soccer Team poses after winning the SLIAC ChampionshipsST. LOUIS - The Women’s volleyball and soccer teams this past weekend both earned St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Tournament (SLIAC) bids to their NCAA Division III national tournaments. The first round of the NCAA volleyball tournament begins Thursday when the team faces Hope College in Elmhurst, Ill. The first round of soccer will be held on Friday when the Gorloks face off against Wheaton College in Wheaton, Ill.

This is the 10th time the Gorlok Women’s Soccer team has appeared in the NCAA D III national tournament, and this year is their second consecutive appearance. The soccer team has captured six SLIAC tournament championships, all of which have come in the last nine years.

Webster’s Women’s Soccer Team has tallied 89 goals this season (4.24 per game) while conceding 12 goals (0.57 per game). Entering the SLIAC tournament, the Gorloks had the sixth-highest scoring offense and the 32nd-best goals-against average nationally in NCAA Division III. They earned the NCAA berth with a 4-1 defeat of Principia College Saturday afternoon (Nov. 9).

Webster's .905 won-loss-tied percentage is one of the top-10 percentages in Division III this season and the second-highest percentage in program history, behind only the 2001 team that went 18-1-1 (.925 won-loss-tied percentage). The Gorloks (19-2 overall, 9-0 SLIAC) set a program record for wins in a season, as they surpassed the 18-win '01 squad.

Webster University's volleyball squad captured its third consecutive conference tournament championship with a 3-0 sweep (25-12, 25-13, 25-20) of Principia College on Saturday evening (Nov. 9). The championship is Webster's seventh in eight years. The win was the Volleyball Team’s 26th this season, breaking the school record set by the 2007 squad.

Volleyball Players celebrate a good play during the SLIAC championshipThree Gorlok Volleyball players were named to the SLIAC all-tournament team, headed by junior Sam Kersting (St. Louis, MO / Lindbergh), who was chosen the conference tournament's Most Valuable Player. Other Webster honorees were junior Jenny Howard (Florissant, MO / Duchesne), and junior Kristen McDowell (Staunton, IL / Staunton). Those same three players were Webster's representatives on the all-tournament team last season when Howard was the tournament MVP.

Kersting was voted the conference Defensive Player of the Year. She is the third Gorlok ever to receive this award, joining Mary Jo Schweitzer (2007) and Sarah Bailey (2010).

Kersting also was named the Most Valuable Player for the SLIAC tournament. She is joined on the all-tournament team by Jenny Howard, last year's tournament MVP, and Kristen McDowell.

This is the second time in their careers that Kersting and Ratkewicz have received all-conference honors. Kersting was a first-team selection in 2012 and Ratkewicz made the second team in 2011.

Three other Gorloks received honorable mention in the all-conference voting. In addition, Kristen McDowell was chosen as the team's representative on the all-sportsmanship team.

This group of players helped Webster set a school record with 26 wins, prior to the NCAA tournament, win its third consecutive SLIAC tournament championship, and earn an automatic berth in the NCAA Division III national tournament for the third straight year.
