Online Faculty Training

Training is available from the OLC year-round. New training cohorts start six to eight weeks prior to an instructor’s first time teaching online. Online Faculty members must be approved to teach online by the program chair or director in the respective school or college in the university. Once approved, the Online Learning Center contacts the faculty member to provide access to training and the training timeline.

Below is an outline of the steps in the training process:

A. Commit to Engage and peer discussions (1-2 hours)
OLC managers and trainers explain our expectations for fully-connected instructors in Webster University online courses.
B. Foundations of Online Learning and Tool Training (2-3 hours)
Instructors participate in an asynchronous course designed to engage the learners and created for an atmosphere of sharing amongst peer-professionals as to best practices in online instruction. All instructors will receive a training course with videos, instructional materials, and relevant activities designed to prepare the instructor for using the tools of Canvas, the learning management system used by Webster University for all online courses
C. Shadow a live course, if applicable
Select programs at Webster University have added a shadowing piece to the training process for their instructors. Currently, instructors in the Walker School of Business and Technology and instructors in the International Relations Department are put in contact with a course mentor and allowed to shadow a live online course. Depending on the timeframe, shadowing and teaching may have to take place concurrently.
DPrinciples of Effective Online Teaching, Administrative Essentials for teaching online at Webster University, Student Services information and reflective activities (1- 2 hours)
Instructors learn more about the essential details of being an online instructor at Webster University, including important dates, who to contact for support, and how to handle certain situations encountered in the online classroom. Instructors will also learn about the services provided by the Student Services team that prepares the students for the online learning environment.

Please send an email to olc@webster.edu if you have any questions about training to become an online instructor.
