Graduate Certificate in Web Services

It is widely recognized that information is necessary to survive and prosper in an increasingly competitive economy. Information Systems professionals as well as managers must understand how to organize, utilize, and disseminate the data that exists in corporate databases. The hardware and software needed to build and maintain large quantities of data is now accessible to businesses of all sizes. There is a great need for corporations to understand how to design and implement web services that can enable their computers to communicate and exchange data via a network, or the Internet. Almost every business, small organizations and large, can benefit further from web service implementations.

Web services are defined as "enabling technologies that facilitate the assembly and integration of applications in order to create new, more meaningful and/or more user-specific applications, all the speed of the Internet.” The creation of web services occurs within the computing back-end, unbeknownst to the human who happens to be looking at web-services-enabled applications on any number of electronic devices/clients". This certificate program will provide Information Systems professionals and managers with the skills needed to understand, develop, analyze, and implement Web services within their company. The information presented as part of this certificate program will be useful to programmers, who will learn to incorporate web services in their applications and networks, and to Information Systems managers, who must decided when and how to adopt this new and increasingly beneficial technology.

The Certificate in Web Services will explore the following:

  1. How companies can use web services to improve productivity and enhance their business
  2. Present numerous case studies that describe how specific companies are employing web services to integrate and improve communication within the company, with clients, and with company partners
  3. Delve into technical topics, including explanations of core web services technologies and standards
  4. Explore various technologies for locating web services on a network, both public and private
  5. Identify tools and products that best fit web service requirements
  6. Provide a detailed analysis of web service security issues
  7. Explore working examples of web services and Web service clients built using the standards and tools discussed in the certificate program

Web Services Program and Course Syllabi

The certificate program is a six-course program of study designed to meet the individual needs of the student. Graduate credit earned in the courses can also be used as part of the MBA program to create an emphasis in Web Services.
