Software
Some courses or programs may require additional software to perform various activities. You should check each course syllabus for specific requirements. Below is a list of common software that may be required in your online course.
Microsoft Office – The basic Office package, which includes Word, Excel and PowerPoint, is a required tool for online courses.
- Windows: version 2003 or 2007
- Macintosh: version 2004 or 2008
Important: There have been issues recently revolving around compatibility between the new versions of Microsoft Office and the older versions. The newest version of Office saves files into the ".docx" format instead of using ".doc".
You have three possible solutions for this issue:
- Install the compatibility pack (Windows) from Microsoft for the earlier versions of Office to open up documents from the newest versions without updating your entire software package. Mac users can get the plugin here: DocX converter (21.1 MB)
- Upgrade to the latest version of Microsoft Office. Webster faculty and students can purchase Microsoft operating system and software at low cost. For full details and to purchase software, please go to www.webster.edu/technology/microsoft
- Save your files in the older version by doing a Save as... Office 2003 file.
Additional Software/Plug-ins
A majority of the online courses require the use Adobe Flash Player, Java, and Adobe Reader. Click on an image below to go to the website to download that plug-in. Please make sure to read information on the download pages for each of the software products listed.
